The Scottish League Cup was played for the 42nd time in 1987/88 . The Scottish League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 11, 1987 and ended with the final on October 25, 1987. If a duel was not decided after 90 minutes plus overtime, it came to penalties. The Glasgow Rangers won the title for the 15th time in the club's history in the final against FC Aberdeen . For the Rangers it should be the start of a series of three league cup wins in a row. The club won in the following two finals in 1989 and 1990 against Aberdeen.
