Avraham "Avi" Cohen (born November 14, 1956 in Cairo , Egypt , † December 28, 2010 Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli soccer player and soccer coach .

Career

Cohen began his career at Maccabi Tel Aviv before being transferred to England to Liverpool FC in 1979 for a transfer fee of £ 200,000 . In 1980 he was English champion with the Reds and the following year he won the European Champions' Cup . There the defender could not assert himself permanently and returned to Maccabi in his homeland. In 1987 Cohen was signed to Scotland by Graeme Souness , a former teammate from Liverpool times who now coached the Glasgow Rangers . However, he only stayed briefly and went to Maccabi Netanja , where he also ended his career.

Cohen also played for the national team . First he represented his country at the 1976 Olympic Games against Guatemala on July 19, 1976. The first official international game for the A selection took place in the 1-0 away win against Greece on September 22 of the same year. He played a total of 52 games for his home country, scoring three goals.

In 1979 Avi Cohen was also named Israel's Footballer of the Year . Cohen died as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Cohen's son Tamir Cohen is also a professional soccer player. Like his father once, he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv (2002 to 2007).
