history
The club, founded in 1955, played for decades at a lower level, until 1997 when it was promoted to the highest Israeli league for the first time, to which Hapoel Ashkelon only belonged for one year. In 2007 Ashkelon was a second division team in the final of the Israeli State Cup , in which Hapoel Tel Aviv lost 4: 5 (1: 1) on penalties.
