Player career

Manchester United (1974–1982)

Jimmy Nicholl made his debut on April 5, 1975 for Manchester United in the second-rate Football League Second Division . After promotion at the end of the season United reached Nicholl (20 league games) in the Football League First Division 1975/76 third place in the table. In addition to the good league placement, the club moved into the final of the FA Cup 1975/76 without the not used Nicholl , but lost the final game against Southampton FC with 0: 1. Coach Tommy Docherty's team performed even better in the FA Cup in 1976/77 . After goals by Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff when Jimmy Case conceded , United won 2-1 against Liverpool. After two less successful years, United managed to win the runner-up behind Liverpool in the 1979/80 season . Previously, Nicholl and his team had reached the final of the FA Cup 1978/79 for the third time , but missed the second title in this prestigious competition (2: 3 against Arsenal).

Sunderland AFC and Toronto Blizzard (1982–1984)

After three appearances on loan at the first division AFC Sunderland , the Toronto- born Jimmy Nicholl moved to the Toronto Blizzard in the North American Soccer League in 1982 . After his temporary return to Sunderland, he reached the final of the NASL in the 1983 season with Toronto, but lost this game 0-1 against the Tulsa Roughnecks. A year later, the team moved into the final again, but this time failed with 0-2 to Chicago Sting .

Glasgow Rangers and West Bromwich Albion (1983–1989)

After seventeen games for the Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers in the 1983/84 season, Jimmy Nicholl moved on his return from Canada in November 1984 to the English first division club West Bromwich Albion . After relegation as bottom of the table from the Football League First Division 1985/86 , he signed a contract with the Glasgow Rangers again in the summer of 1986 and won the Scottish Championship with his team in 1986/87. In the European Cup of National Champions 1987/88 , the Rangers failed in the quarter-finals to Steaua Bucharest . In 1989 Nicholl won the second championship title in the Scottish League with his team.

He spent the following years with the Scottish first division club Dunfermline Athletic or as a player-coach with the Raith Rovers , before ending his playing career in 1996.

Northern Ireland National Team (1985-1996)

In 1982 he was nominated by national coach Billy Bingham in the Northern Irish World Cup squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain and played all three group games . After the surprising group win against hosts Spain, he was also used in the two group games of the intermediate round, but retired with his team after a 2-2 defeat against Austria and a 4-1 defeat against France.

Four years later he was nominated again for the Northern Irish World Cup squad and used in the three group matches. Northern Ireland was eliminated from the 1986 World Cup in third place after the group stage (1: 1 against Algeria, 1: 2 against Spain and 0: 3 against Brazil) .

E. against Celtic Glasgow).

On February 28, 1996 he took over the coaching post at the English second division club Millwall , but rose with his new team at the end of the season in the third division.
