The "Haus zum Krönli" at Hirschengraben 42 during a break from the theater

The Theater Stok ( spelling Theater STOK ) is an independently run small theater in the "Haus zum Krönli" at Hirschengraben 42 in the city of Zurich . The year-round program consists of in-house productions and guest performances.

The name Stok originally corresponded to the family name of the founder Zbigniew Stok . Today STOK stands for the fact that soloists (S), active (T), originals (O) and consequent (K) find space in the STOK theater.

The theater is housed in the former wine cellar of the house built in 1739 for Hans Conrad Escher-Pestalozzi, also called "Haus zum Krönli". The name refers to the opposite house "zum Kronentor", which was built on the Neumarkttor until 1828 . The house is listed as a cultural asset of regional importance . The playing area is 4 by 6 meters and the auditorium offers space for 60 to 80 spectators, depending on the seating. The inventory is movable and can be adapted to the respective needs. There is no classic stage with a curtain; A raised platform serves as a play area and is freely visible from three sides.

history

The theater was founded in 1970 as Zbigniew Stok's Kammertheater . The first venue was the ETH Zurich students' “Beat Room” at Leonhardstrasse 25a. The room had to be redesigned for each performance. The permanent venue has been at Hirschengraben 42 since October 1971. From 1972, until his death in 1990, Zbigniew Stok ran the theater together with Erica Hänssler (1947–2016). She continued to run it until her death, since 1992 together with Peter Doppelfeld . The two theater people performed together under the name "Theater Total". In 1993 the theater was renamed from Zbigniew Stok's Chamber Theater to Theater Stok.

Next to the theater on Hirschengraben and the Theater Museum (there is 682342  /  249160 ) on Sihlquai 252, in a former factory owner's villa on the banks of the Limmat . The administrative premises of the Stok Theater are also located there.

Erica Hänssler died on January 1st, 2016. Peter Doppelfeld will continue to run the theater.

Theater operations

Because the Stok Theater no longer has its own ensemble, only one in-house production is usually shown each year. The shorter playing periods also contributed to this. For this, the stage of the Stok Theater is open to other artists. It can be rented by the week; four appearances per week are compulsory. This concept should help to offer small productions and independent artists the opportunity to perform.

Due to the abundance of guest performances, only the in-house productions are fully mentioned.

financing

The mainstay of the financing is the income from rentals for guest performances and in-house productions. There has been a subsidy from the City of Zurich since 1983, although it fluctuates (for the period 2012–2015 it is 33,000 francs). Another important contribution is the additional rent waiver granted. The self-financing share was around 65% in 2012, and the subsidy converted to CHF 3.20 per entry (with an average entry price of CHF 30). In 2012 there were 183 performances with a total of 10,690 visitors, which corresponds to an average number of visitors of 58 per performance or 83%.
