Erica Hänssler (born November 7, 1947 in Zurich ; † January 1, 2016 there ) was a Swiss actress, playwright and theater director.

Life

Erica Hänssler first attended school in Zurich, then in Vevey . She began an apprenticeship as a graphic designer at Nestlé in Vevey. For a while she studied German language and literature in Vienna and later was employed by Swissair as a flight attendant . In 1973 she came to Zbigniew Stoks Kammertheater in Zurich. The acting training with Elisabeth Barth and Zbigniew Stok lasted three years , which she completed with the diploma of chamber actress in Karlsruhe .

In addition to working as an actress in the productions of the Stok Theater, Erica Hänssler became increasingly involved in the management of the Stok Theater, which she ran with him until Zbigniew Stok's death in 1990. After that she took on further responsibility for the theater, first alone and from 1992 together with Peter Doppelfeld .

At that time, the Stok Theater could not afford any ensemble productions, so Erica Hänssler began to transform literary works into solo projects. After the texts that were not written for the stage, new in-house productions have been made every year since the beginning of the 1990s, such as “Blue Hour” by Else Lasker-Schüler or “Fairy Tales of the Last Thought” by Edgar Hilsenrath .

More and more, Theater Total began to take shape for her :

«… An ongoing process of creating, finding and asking, in which Erica Hänssler herself designed everything from the initial idea to the stage version, i.e. text, dramaturgy, stage design, masks, music, costumes and posters. The productions were creations of their own: Thoughts, sensations, ideas, emotions, they matured in their entire, comprehensive personality until they finally matured as collected, consciously accumulated energies for expression on the stage. In this sense, she lived and worked, together with Peter Doppelfeld, in the Stok Theater, but also in her home, on Sihlquai 252, where the theater fund laid the foundation for the theater museum. The private rooms are museum, studio and living space in one, and after each production new original costumes, masks, posters and much more were added to the collection.

Erica Hänssler succumbed to cancer on January 1, 2016.

Erica Hänssler was the author of her own plays and was responsible for the stage arrangements for numerous other authors.
