The main post office in Frauenfeld has been the building on Löwenplatz in Frauenfeld since 1898 . It is under cantonal monument protection.

history

In the course of the first postal connections in Thurgau, a post office was set up on February 16, 1790 in the "Kreuz" inn. The landlord there was appointed freight forwarder against a guarantee of 4000 francs, the currency of the time. The acceptance point in the "Kreuz" existed until July 1, 1807. It was no longer able to meet the growing demand, so the Post Office looked for a different solution. Established in the "Krone" inn, the first official post office opened in Frauenfeld on July 1, 1807, and existed until November 23, 1898.

The telephony held on 15 June 1890 in Frauenfeld feeder. The first switchboard, in the «Goldener Hirschen» inn, was used to switch the 16 subscribers.

Post office building in the 1930s

From 1894 onwards a replacement of the post office in the "Krone" was necessary, where up to now 9 civil servants and 15 employees were active. Concrete projects were pursued by 1894 at the latest. After a few negotiations, the location on the “Löwen” property and the building area of 500 m 2 and 123.5 m 2 for the remise were determined. The federal decree of March 27, 1896, as well as the building loan paved the way for the new building.

On November 24, 1898, the post office began operating at the new location. For the first time, all postal services, letter post, telephone, telegraph and travel mail were under one roof. The premises for the public were on the ground floor, the telephone and telegraph infrastructure on the first floor. Theodor Gohl worked as an architect and designed the post office as a magnificent building with a corner dome tower.

The two-storey structure consists of two wing structures of unequal length, which are connected by a tower-like corner dome tower. He emphasizes the location of the raised site, especially in relation to the streets sloping on both sides. The facade and outside are richly decorated and the representative style is continued inside with a staircase and fountain. At the beginning there was a guy frame for the telephone and telegraph wires on the dome, which was replaced by a flagpole in 1928. The reconstruction from 1980 refers to the original condition.

When a telephone building was added in 1955, the post office was able to set up a messenger room of 400 m² on its upper floor. In 1964, a second post office was opened at Zürcherstrasse 67, which made the previous post office the main office and was given the name "Frauenfeld 1". From 1982 to 1986, the entire complex was expanded by another extension along Rheinstrasse, which was replaced by a new building in 2018.

The historic building from 1898 is a cantonal monument . The striking lantern on the domed roof was broken off after the telephone cables were laid in the ground in the 1930s. When it was restored in 1981, the wrong proportions initially sparked discussion. The structure was then shortened to the historically correct height.
