The Scottish League Cup was played for the 28th time in 1973/74 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 11, 1973 and ended with the final on December 15, 1973 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, Hibernian Edinburgh started the competition that prevailed against Celtic Glasgow in the previous year's final . In this year's final, FC Dundee and Celtic Glasgow met again . For Dundee it was the fourth final in the League Cup after 1952 , 1953 and 1968 . For Celtic it was the eleventh league cup final since 1965 , and the 13th overall since 1957 . Dundee won the final 1-0 with a goal from Gordon Wallace . The Dees won the League Cup in Scotland for the third time after their two triumphs in the 1950s. The Bhoys from Glasgow lost the final for the fourth time in a row. With 27,974 spectators, a minus record set to this day was achieved in a final in the League Cup. The reasons for this were the bad weather with snow and icy temperatures. There were also problems with electricity and severe fuel shortages in Scotland. Very few Dundee fans made it to the final venue as a result. Despite the frozen field of play, referee Bobby Davidson let the match take place, although both teams pleaded for a cancellation. During the final, a marker between the goal area and the center circle was tested to help identify offside . The experiment was examined by FIFA President Stanley Rous . In the 1973/74 season, the defeated Bhoys won the Scottish Championship and the Cup in Green . Celtic took part as champions in the following season in the European Cup and was eliminated in the first round against the Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus . Loser Dundee took part in the UEFA Cup as a cup finalist and was also eliminated in the first round. The opponent was RWD Molenbeek from Belgium.
