Thomas "Tommy" Gemmell (born October 16, 1943 in Motherwell ; † March 2, 2017 ) was a Scottish football player and coach .

Player career

Celtic Glasgow (1961-1971)

Gemmell played as a left full-back and was best known for his powerful long-range shots. On October 25, 1961, he moved from Coltness United to Celtic Glasgow . He was one of the Lisbon Lions , who in 1967 became the first British team to win the European Cup with 2-1 against Inter Milan . In the final of this competition, he scored a spectacular goal, which led to the interim 1-1 equalization. In total, he scored four hits during the ongoing competition. In the 1969/70 European Cup he scored another goal in the final against Feyenoord Rotterdam with the 1-0 lead and is one of two British players who have managed to score a goal in two different European Cup finals; the other player who did so is Phil Neal of Liverpool FC . Celtic lost the final game 1: 2 after extra time against the Dutch champions.

Gemmell played 418 times for Celtic and scored 64 goals. In 247 league games he scored 37 goals, in 43 Scottish Cup games he scored five times, in 74 league cup games he scored ten times and in 54 European Cup games he scored twelve goals for himself. Of 37 penalty kicks taken, 34 were successfully converted. Between 1966 and 1971 he won six Scottish championships in a row with Celtic.

Nottingham Forest (1971–1973)

On December 17, 1971, he moved to the English first division club Nottingham Forest , where he should represent Liam O'Kane . The team had lost many important players in recent years and Gemmell was relegated from the Football League First Division 1971/72 to the second division in his first season in England . In July 1973 he returned to Scotland after a short stay in the USA.

Dundee FC (1973-1977)

Tommy Gemmell signed a new contract with Dundee FC and won the 1974 Scottish League Cup final against his former club Celtic . He later worked as a coach for Dundee and the Albion Rovers .

Scottish National Team (1966–1971)

In April 1966 he made his debut for Scotland in an international match against England . The following year he was involved in the Scottish 3-2 win at Wembley against reigning world champions England. He made 18 caps for Scotland and scored a goal from a successful penalty kick in an 8-0 win over Cyprus during qualifying for the 1970 World Cup .
