David Hay (born January 29, 1948 in Paisley , Central Lowlands ) is a former Scottish football coach and player, who mainly played in midfield .

Life

player

Hay began his professional career in 1966 at Celtic Glasgow and was thus part of the legendary Hoops team that won the Scottish Football Championship nine times in a row between 1966 and 1974 . However, Hay was only a full member of the first team since the 1969/70 season, so that only the title wins in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 are attributed to him.

After the suspension of Tommy Gemmell by coach Jock Stein in October 1969, Hay became a regular at Celtic. He quickly developed into a national player and played a total of 27 international appearances for the Scottish national team between 1970 and 1974 . The highlight of his career in the national team was participation in the 1974 World Cup , where he played all of the Bravehearts' preliminary rounds .

Immediately after the World Cup, Hay moved to Chelsea , where he ended his active career in 1979 due to a knee injury.

Trainer

After his active career, Hay began to train in the youth division of Chelsea. He received his first professional contract as head coach with FC Motherwell , with whom he won the second division championship and thus the return to the top division in the 1981/82 season .

In the four seasons between 1983/84 and 1986/87 he trained the first team of his former club Celtic and won the championship title and the cup competition once.

Hay then worked as head coach at Lillestrøm SK , with whom he won the Norwegian football championship in 1989 . In March 2004 he won the League Cup with Livingston FC ; it is the only title so far in the history of the club, which was founded in 1943.
