The Scottish League Cup was played for the 31st time in 1976/77 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 14, 1976 and ended with the final on November 6, 1976 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The defending champions Glasgow Rangers, who won the Old Firm derby against Celtic Glasgow in the previous year's final, were eliminated in this year's semi-final against the eventual winners, FC Aberdeen . In the final, the Dons met last year's finalist Celtic Glasgow . Aberdeen reached the league cup final for the third time after 1947 and 1956 . For Celtic it was the thirteenth consecutive final since 1965 and the 16th overall since 1957 . Aberdeen won the final 2-1 with goals from Drew Jarvie and Davie Robb . Kenny Dalglish scored the goal for Celtic . It was the Reds' second league cup triumph after 1956 . In the 1976/77 season, the defeated Bhoys won the double of championship and cup . Due to the victory in the championship Celtic took part in the European Cup 1977/78 in the following season , Aberdeen as third in the league at the UEFA Cup 1977/78 .
