The Scottish League Cup was played for the 12th time in 1957/58 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 10, 1957 and ended with the final on October 19, 1957 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As defending champion, Celtic Glasgow started the competition that had prevailed against Partick Thistle in the previous year's final . In this year's final, Celtic met the Rangers at the Old Firm . The Bhoys reached the league cup final for the second time in a row and overall. The Rangers reached the final for the fourth time after 1947 , 1949 and 1952 . Both clubs faced each other in a final for the first time in 30 years. The final went down in history as Hampden in the Sun with a 7-1 final win by the Bhoys in Green . To this day it represents the record victory and defeat of the two rivals, as well as the record victory in a cup final in Great Britain . The TV broadcast was ended prematurely during the game. The rest of the footage of the game wasn't released until 1990. The photo of Dick Beattie in which he shows seven fingers became famous. In the Scottish Championship , Celtic was third in the table, the Rangers runner-up behind Heart of Midlothian .
"What's the time?", "Its Seven past Niven !"
