John "Johnny" Gaulton Hubbard (born December 16, 1930 in Pretoria , † June 21, 2018 ) was a South African football player .
Career
Johnny Hubbard began his career in his South African hometown of Pretoria with Berea Park FC. With a height of only 159 cm, he played as a winger . In 1949 he joined the Glasgow Rangers . With the club he was five times Scottish champion and two cup winners in the 1950s. He was a player in the first Rangers team to play internationally in Europe when they took part in the 1956/57 European Cup. He was also the first African player to appear in a European competition and was the first to score a goal against OGC Nice in October 1956. In his career with the Rangers, he scored 65 of 68 penalty goals, which he was nicknamed the "Penalty King". At the Old Firm on January 1, 1955, he was the last Rangers player to score a hat trick in a league game against Celtic . The more popular Hubbard completed a total of 238 competitive games for the Rangers and scored 104 goals between 1949 and 1959. From 1959 to 1962 he played three years in England at Bury , with which he won the 1961 third division championship. He then let his career at Ayr United end and became a PE teacher . After retiring, Hubbard was elected to the Rangers Hall of Fame .
He last lived in Ayrshire in southwest Scotland . In old age he still attended Rangers games in Ibrox Park . He died on June 21, 2018 at the age of 87.
