William "Willie" Fernie (born November 22, 1928 in Kinglassie , † July 1, 2011 in Glasgow ) was a Scottish football player and coach . As a player for the Scottish national team, he was a member of the squad at the 1954 and 1958 World Championships .

career

Fernie first played in his hometown for Kinglassie Hearts . In 1949 he moved to Celtic Glasgow , where he distinguished himself as a flexible player in the following years and held various playing positions. In 1954 he won the Scottish double with the team and was then nominated for the 1954 World Cup squad after he was accused for the first time for the "Bravehearts" in the last preparatory game against Finland . He was one of the 13 players who made the trip to Switzerland but was eliminated after two defeats at the end of the group stage. In 1956 and 1957 he won two more titles with Celtic, the Scottish League Cup. In the meantime, he was irregularly included in the national team, at the 1958 World Cup he was again in the 22-player squad and was again one of the 13 players who traveled to Sweden. Once again, the end of the group stage was the end.

Fernie left Scotland in 1958 and joined English club Middlesbrough FC . After two years, however, he returned to Celtic and played another season for the club. He then joined FC St. Mirren , with whom he reached the cup final in 1962. From 1963 he was briefly under contract with Partick Thistle and Alloa Athletic before ending his career in Scottish non-league football at FC Fraserburgh, in Ireland at FC Coleraine and Northern Ireland at Bangor FC .

In 1967 Fernie took over the coaching position with the reserve team of Celtic Glasgow, which he held until 1973. He then coached FC Kilmarnock , with whom he rose to Division One in 1974. After relegation in 1977, with the goal of resumption of the season, the season opener failed, whereupon he was released from his duties. He then left the football business and worked, among other things, as a taxi driver in Glasgow.
