The Scottish League Cup was played for the 40th time in 1985/86 . The Scottish League Cup began on August 14, 1985 and ended with the final on October 27, 1985. The clubs of the Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League participated in the competition. If a duel was not decided after 90 minutes plus extra time, there was a penalty shoot-out. The title was secured for the third time in the club history of Aberdeen FC in the final against Hibernian Edinburgh .
