Life
The then 17-year-old Blackley received his first professional contract with Hibernian Edinburgh , where he was under contract in his first stage from 1965 to 1977 and with whom he won the Scottish League Cup in 1973 .
During his time with the Hibs , he also made the leap to the Scottish national team , for which he completed a total of seven international appearances between 1973 and 1977. The highlight of his career in the national team was participation in the 1974 World Cup , where he played the first round match against Zaire (2-0).
In late 1977 he moved to the English first division , where he played for Newcastle United until 1979 and then for Preston North End . In 1981 he returned to Scotland and was under contract with Hamilton Academical until 1983 , where he served as player- coach in his second season in 1982/83 . For the 1983/84 season he returned to his first club Hibernian FC, in whose ranks he ended his active career. At the same time he acted as assistant to his coach Pat Stanton and was appointed head coach in 1984 after Stanton had resigned from his post. Under his leadership, the Hibs reached the League Cup final in 1985 , which was lost 3-0 against the then very successful team of Aberdeen FC under coach Alex Ferguson .
After another stint as head coach at Cowdenbeath FC , Blackley worked as an assistant coach at various clubs.
