The Drybrough Cup was played for the second time in 1972 . The Scottish Football Cup competition, which was run by the Scottish Football Association, began on July 29, 1972 and ended with the final on August 5, 1972 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The four best-placed teams from the first and second Scottish leagues of the 1971/72 season took part in the competition. The competition took place in knockout mode and consisted of the 1st round, the semi-finals and the final. In the final, Hibernian Edinburgh and Celtic Glasgow faced each other. The Hibs won the final 5-3 after extra time. Celtic lost the second consecutive final in this competition.
