The Drybrough Cup was played for the 4th time in 1974 . The Scottish Football Cup competition, which was run by the Scottish Football Association, began on July 27, 1974 and ended with the final on August 3, 1974 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The four best-placed teams from the first and second Scottish leagues of the 1973/74 season took part in the competition. The competition took place in knockout mode and consisted of the 1st round, the semi-finals and the final. In the final, the Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow faced each other at the Old Firm . The final threatened to be canceled due to a call by the players' union for a boycott. The cancellation was prevented by the Scottish Football Association . Before and after the final, numerous supporters of both teams were taken into custody by the police. Celtic won the final 4-2 on penalties. The Bhoys were able to win the Drybrough Cup for the first time after three defeats in the final.
