The Drybrough Cup was played for the 5th time in 1979 . The Scottish Football Cup competition, which was run by the Scottish Football Association, began on July 28, 1979 and ended with the final on August 4, 1979 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The four best-placed teams from the first and second Scottish leagues of the 1978/79 season took part in the competition. The competition took place in knockout mode and consisted of the 1st round, the semi-finals and the final. In the final after 1974, the Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow faced each other at the Old Firm . The Rangers were able to retaliate for the defeat five years earlier with a 3-1 victory.
