William Pullar "Sandy" Jardine (born December 31, 1948 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † April 24, 2014 ibid) was a Scottish football player who played for the Glasgow Rangers and Heart of Midlothian during his playing days .

Career

Jardine made his debut for the Rangers in 1967 and played a total of 674 games for the club, as a defender or as a libero . He was part of the famous team that won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972 , the greatest achievement in Rangers history. In total he was three times Scottish champion and five times Scottish cup winner.

In 1975 Sandy Jardine was voted Scotland's Footballer of the Year for the first time , again in 1986 at the age of 38.

Towards the end of his career he moved to the team of his youth in 1982, Heart of Midlothian in Edinburgh, where he stayed until 1988. For the last two years he also acted as assistant coach to Alex MacDonald .

Jardine played 38 caps for Scotland , the first against Portugal in 1971 and the last against Belgium in 1979 . He took part in the soccer world championships in 1974 and 1978 .
