Career

Club career

After making his debut at the age of 18 at the end of the 1969/70 season, he made a total of 409 league games for Partick Thistle . In 1971/72 he won the Scottish League Cup with Partick with a 4-1 win over Celtic Glasgow . In 1981 he was voted Footballer of the Year by Scottish journalists . In 1982 he moved to Hibernian Edinburgh .

In 1988 he was replaced by Andy Goram , who also ousted him in the national team. He then moved to the American Soccer League to the Orlando Lions , but returned a short time later to Scotland and let his professional career at Celtic Glasgow, Hamilton Academical and Ayr United end.

International career

Rough participated in the World Championships and in 1978 , 1982 and 1986 . He played a total of 53 times and was a record-breaking national goalkeeper for a long time, only Jim Leighton overtook him. In 16 of his 53 international matches, Rough remained clean. On September 10, 1985 Rough completed his penultimate in the World Cup qualifier against Wales. He was substituted on in the second half because Leighton lost his contacts . The result, obtained through a Davie Cooper penalty , meant Scotland could move into a qualifying match against Australia. The game was overshadowed by the death of Scottish national coach Jock Stein , who collapsed and died during the game . Rough was nominated for the finals, but did not play and only came to another use in the national dress.

Further career

In the early 1990s, Rough coached the amateur club Glenafton Athletic for some time . Today he and Ewan Cameron host a football show on the radio, which was broadcast twice a week. He also writes a column in the Scottish edition of the Daily Mirror .
