Brazil claimed three wins in Group 6. Against the USSR (2: 1) in the first game, the winning goal fell a minute before the final whistle, but Scotland (4: 1) and New Zealand (4: 0) could not oppose the Brazilians around Zico. The decision for second place had to be decided by goal difference, because the Soviets and Scots parted 2-2. Thus the narrower defeat of the USSR against the Brazilians hit through and the men around star striker Oleg Blochin were on, while the Scots around Kenny Dalglish had to leave.
