Of the six games in Group 1, five ended in a draw. Only Poland (with Lato) were able to beat Peru 5-1. For the third place in the 1974 World Cup, this meant winning the group, while Italy, thanks to the better goal difference (2: 2), came second in front of the surprisingly strong team from Cameroon (1: 1). Italy thus entered the second round without a win.
