World champions Argentina met Cameroon in the opening game of the tournament in Group B and suffered a sensational 1-0 defeat. Cameroon's victory was not their only trick in this group, because the Romanians also had to bow to this opponent with 1: 2. Cameroon could even afford to lose the last game against the Russians 4-0 without losing the group's leading position. This victory was no longer of any use to the Russians, as the two 2-0 defeats against group runners-up Romania and Argentina meant an early end. Argentina just reached the round of 16 in third place.
Round of 16

Roger Milla was the match winner in the first round of 16 match for Cameroon against Colombia. For 90 minutes, the teams could not break through the defensive lines of the opponent decisively, but then the 38-year-old Lambada dancer struck. His two goals to make it 1-0 and 2-0 (106th and 109th), with Colombia's goalkeeper Higuita losing the ball on one of his trips outside the box, which meant the fatal blow for the South Americans, whose goal came too late. For the first time an African team reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

Up to the 82nd minute, Cameroon led 2-1 against England and the sensation was within reach. But two penalty kicks from center forward Gary Lineker (83rd and 105th) destroyed Cameroon's dreams of the semi-final. However, the pioneering work of the Cameroonians had an impact. For the first time ever, the Africans were promised three finals for the 1994 World Cup.
