Soccer World Cup 1990 / Austria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Austrian national team at the 1990 World Cup .

qualification

Austria played in the qualification for the 1990 World Cup in European group 3. Opponents were the Soviet Union , Turkey , the GDR and Iceland . The two best in the group qualified for the World Cup.

Austria's basis for successful World Cup qualification was home strength (3 wins, 1 draw; 8: 3 goals), with which the weaknesses away from home (2 draws, 2 defeats; 1: 6 goals) could be compensated. Before the last matchday they were only in 4th place. However, a 3-0 win against the GDR in their last World Cup qualifier and a simultaneous defeat of Turkey in the USSR finally made them second.

The game was played very roughly on both sides. Right from the start, the flow of the game was often interrupted by many fouls by both teams. In the 34th minute, Peter Artner was dismissed for a harmless foul by the Syrian referee, who did not seem up to his task throughout the game. Shortly afterwards Andi Herzog performed a wonderful solo right up to the opposing goal; However, Meola fended off Herzog's shot in front of the goal line. After a nice header from Rodax to Ogris, the latter sprinted past two opponents and in the 50th minute shot the ball with his right foot over Meola into the far corner to make the 1-0 lead. After a cross pass from Streiter, Rodax scored the redeeming goal of the previously superior Austrians in the 63rd minute of the game. In the last quarter of an hour, however, the Austrians withdrew too far and left the Americans room to play. In the 83rd minute, Murray scored the final score of 2: 1 with a shot through Lindenberger's legs.
