Kurt Russ (born November 23, 1964 in Langenwang ) is a former Austrian soccer player and today's soccer coach . The defender took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy .

Career

Kurt Russ began his football career with his home club ATuS Raika Langenwang in Styria. He comes from a footballing family; his uncle Heinz Russ was a national player. He got into the professional business with Kapfenberger SV , for which he played in the 2nd division until his transfer to the first division club Vienna in the winter break in 1988 . Kurt Russ experienced a rapid rise in the Blue-Yellows, because he was not only able to achieve the only two appearances in the European Cup to date with the team, but also played under for the first time on April 27, 1988 - just one month after his Bundesliga debut Josef Hickersberger in the Austrian national team .

Under Josef Hickersberger, Kurt Russ became the undisputed regular player in the national team, since his debut in a 1-0 win against Denmark he was on the starting line-up in 27 of a possible 33 games until 1991. The highlight of this time was participation in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where Austria was eliminated in the group stage. After the World Cup, the Styrian was poached by the financially strong FC Swarovski Tirol . With the blue-whites he failed twice in the championship and was also called up only once for the national team by Alfred Riedl .

After Kurt Russ was rarely used at the successor FC Wacker Innsbruck and FC Tirol Innsbruck , he moved to ASK Linz in 1995 . In the Bundesliga, Kurt Russ stayed on the ball for the athletes until 1997. He later worked as a player - coach for SC Schwanenstadt in the Regionalliga Mitte . From summer 2007 until March 17, 2008 he was the head coach of SK Vorwärts Steyr . In June 2008 he was appointed coach of the amateur team of Kapfenberger SV (Regionalliga Mitte). In December 2012 he became the new assistant coach of the first team at KSV, but continued to oversee the amateur team as head coach in a double function. In May 2016 he announced that he would be leaving the club for the new season. For the 2016/17 season he became Ivica Vastić's assistant coach at Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg .

For the 2018/19 season, Russ was again coach of the second division Kapfenberger SV. After another two years as a trainer at KSV, he left the second division team during the 2019/20 season in July 2020 and moved to the Bundesliga club TSV Hartberg as assistant coach .
