This article deals with the Austrian men's soccer championship of the 1990/91 season. For the Austrian women's football championship of the 1990/91 season see under Austrian women's football championship 1990/91 .
The Austrian Football Championship 1990/91 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The first-class 1st division and the second-class 2nd division were merged this season through a playoff mode. The regional league east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) as well as the regional leagues of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria acted as the third performance level .
The championship in the 1st and 2nd division was initially held in autumn with 12 teams each in a single round, so that each team initially completed 22 games. This was followed by the division into the championship playoff (1st to 8th of the 1st division), middle playoff (9th to 12th of the 1st division and 1st to 4th of the 2nd division) and relegation playoff (5th to 12th division) . to 12th of the 2nd division) for the spring championship. This meant that in the master playoff champions and European Cup starting places were determined, in the middle playoff promotions and relegations between 1st and 2nd division and in the relegation playoff the relegated to the regional and national leagues. In the championship and relegation playoffs, games, goals and points were taken into spring. The points were halved (and the result rounded up if necessary) to increase the tension in the spring. Naturally, the teams in the middle playoff did not take any points and goals from autumn into the spring season.
General
As in the previous season, there was also a duel between FC Swarovski and Wiener Austria in the championship season of 1990/91. A fall of the violets against Donawitz in their own stadium six rounds before the end seemed to have a decisive effect, but the Styrians also won in the next round against the blue-whites from Innsbruck. Swarovski did not recover from this, could not win the next two games and therefore had to hope for a defeat for Austria on the last matchday at Admira / Wacker. The Südstädter actually took a 2-0 lead, Milewskij scored the next goal before the break. Numerous chances, including a penalty, were missed before Prosenik shot his club for the 19th Austrian soccer championship. Austria was qualified for the 1991/92 European Cup, second division Stockerau started thanks to the cup victory in the 1991/92 European Cup and Swarovski and Sturm took their places in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup . The most successful club were the Tyroleans, who made it to the round of 16 against Liverpool.
