The Austrian Football Championship 1961/62 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), Middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the State League A. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First level - State League A
General
In the 1961/62 season of the Austrian championship, Wiener Austria won the title of Austrian football champion for the second time in a row and for the seventh time. The preliminary decision was made in the 22nd round, when the violets beat their closest pursuer LASK away 2-1; The title was finally fixed in the last round with a 7: 1 over the relegated SAK 1914. As Austrian champion, Vienna Austria qualified for the European Cup of National Champions in 1963 , Cup finalist GAK also took part in the European Cup of Cup Winners 1963 and Rapid was Austria's first representative in the Messestädte-Cup 1963 . The most successful club was Meister Austria, who were the only one to advance one round, but failed in the round of 16 at Stade Rennes .
An additional provision made by the ÖFB before the start of the championship restricted the use of foreigners, according to which, if they were registered after April 1st, they were no longer entitled to play in competitive games for the current season.
At the ÖFB Bundestag meeting, it was decided not to allow the national team's national team matches to be broadcast on the radio or television in the future; only recordings were allowed to be broadcast. With regard to matches abroad, the ÖFB had to agree to this and “domestic competitions were not allowed to compete”.
