The Austrian Football Championship 1959/60 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. As a base for State League A serving regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland), center the Landesliga Salzburg and the Arlberg League (Tyrol, Vorarlberg). The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

The championship of the season 1959/60 Rapid could replace the sports club as Austrian champions. The advantage of the Hütteldorfer was mostly quite thin, but a 6: 1 in a direct duel in the 19th round left little doubt about the 22nd green and white championship title, also because the sports club still unexpected rapid blunders - like the 3: 4 in the penultimate round at home against the WAC - could not help. The Hütteldorfer, who competed in the 1961 European Cup , also cut a good figure internationally: Rapid made it to the semi-finals, where they were only eliminated against the eventual winner Benfica. Austria starts as a cup winner just as internationally - in the first ever European Cup of Cup winners , where Wolverhampton turned out to be too strong away.

Second performance level - regional league

This season, the second performance level was split into three leagues for the first time (Regionalliga Ost, Mitte and West), each of which included clubs from three federal states. Since the Regionalliga West could not be held for the first time until the following season, a Salzburg regional league and an Arlberg league for Vorarlberg and Tyrolean clubs were set up in the 1959/60 season. The champions of these two leagues were allowed to participate in the relegation to the State League A. When these two leagues were merged in 1960/61, around half of the participating clubs had to be relegated - eight from the Salzburg regional league and five from the Arlbergliga. The champions of the Regionalliga Ost and Mitte were directly entitled to promotion to the state league. The last three teams in the Eastern League were relegated to the respective national leagues; By increasing the number of participants in the following year, all clubs in the Central Regionalliga could remain at this level.

    Regional League East

The Regionalliga Ost was re-introduced from this season and clubs from Burgenland, Lower Austria and Vienna played from this season. The 1st Schwechater SC fixed the championship title.

On September 27, after the match between Eisenstadt and Ankersbrot, there were various riots. A line judge and the youth leader of the guests were attacked with stones.

    Relegation

Relegation to the State League A

The relegation concerned the third from bottom of the A-League as well as the champions of the Arlbergliga and the Salzburg Landesliga, who played among themselves for a remaining place in the A-League. The Arlberg champion FC Dornbirn 1913 initially prevailed clearly against the SAK 1914 and also retained the upper hand in the decisive duel against relegated Krems. A Vorarlberg record of 12,000 spectators streamed into the stadium in Dornbirn.
