Robert Dienst (born March 1, 1928 in Vienna ; † June 13, 2000 ) was an Austrian football player in the position of a striker .

He was Austria's top scorer four times and with a total of 323 championship goals to date holds the record of the player with the most hits in the top Austrian football league. As a national player, Robert Dienst took part in the 1954 World Cup, where he came third with the Austrian team.

Career

Robert Dienst began his career at Floridsdorfer AC , for whom he scored his first goals, but moved to Rapid in Hütteldorf in 1948 . In his first season with the Green-Whites he was runner-up and made his debut for the Austrian national soccer team against Hungary, where he immediately scored a goal. With Rapid, Robert Dienst was able to dominate the championship in the following years and finish no worse than second in the table for 11 seasons and bring the championship title to Hütteldorf six times. As a four-time top scorer, the striker played a key role in this. He was also able to celebrate international success by winning the 1951 Zentropa Cup , the successor to the Mitropacup . In the 1950/51 championship he scored 37 goals, which was a new record that was only broken in 1977/78 by Hans Krankl with 41 goals.

The national team was preparing for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, after Portugal was dealt 9-1 in the World Cup qualifier, in which Robert Dienst also met. Robert Dienst was used in the first game of the World Cup, in the 1-0 win over Scotland, but had to make way for Ernst Stojaspal and Turl Wagner in the storm in the following games together with Walter Schleger from Austria . The Austrian team reached the semi-finals, in which they were defeated by Germany. In the "small final" for third place, Austria and Robert Dienst faced the reigning world champion Uruguay. After Robert Dienst was placed in the opposing penalty area, Ernst Stojaspal was able to convert the penalty to 1-0 - Austria won 3-1 and finished the World Cup in Switzerland in third place.

Robert Dienst was also in the Austrian squad for the 1958 World Cup ; in Sweden, however, he was no longer used and was later no longer used in the national team. At Rapid, Dienst was able to cause a sensation in international business, apart from the national titles, and moved with the team to the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1961 , where the green-whites, however, failed at Benfica Lisbon . In 1962 Robert Dienst left the club and ended his career at SV Schwechat . Later he tried his hand at coaching and looked after a few small clubs with his home club Floridsdorfer AC, Tulln, SV Stockerau and Kremser SC. He also worked as assistant coach at Rapid in 1967/68 (double win), as well as at Austria Wien in 1974/75.

In 2007, seven years after his death, the Robert-Dienst-Gasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf was named after him.
