Gustav "Guggi" Wieser (born June 24, 1898 ; † 1960 ) was an Austrian football player in the position of a striker and a successful coach in Germany and Poland.

Career

Gustav Wieser began his career in 1915 at Rapid Vienna , the best address in Austrian football at the time. In his first season he was able to draw attention to his striker qualities with five goals in a friendly against DFC Prague . With the Hütteldorfer he was five times Austrian champion until 1921 and also won the first two Austrian cup competitions.

As a player of the Green-Whites, he celebrated his debut in the Austrian national team on May 7, 1916, in a 3-1 victory over arch rivals Hungary , and made it to his engagement in Germany, while he was not considered for the national team, on nine missions. After his success at Rapid, Gustav Wieser went to the Würzburger Kickers in 1921 , but returned to Vienna in 1923 and now played for Rapids' big district rivals, the Wiener Amateur SV .

The impeccable striker quickly settled in with the still untitled Veilchen and won the championship with his team in 1924, the cup a year later and even the double in 1926 . In these three seasons, Gustav Wieser was crowned Austria's top scorer and also celebrated his comeback in the national team. As a player for the Viennese Amateurs, Guggi Wieser played a total of 18 international matches until 1926, showing one of his best matches in the 4-0 win over Italy in Genoa, where he also contributed two goals to this triumph. He played his last game in the national dress in 1926 in a 4-1 win over France .

After his active career as a soccer player, Gustav Wieser worked as a coach. In 1927 he was in charge of the Eintracht Frankfurt team and, which was still unusual for the time, was supported by a fitness trainer and a doctor. On June 19, 1928, the Austrian took over the coaching position at FC Schalke 04 and in 1929 led Westphalia to their first title win by a West German champion. After working in Germany, Gustav Wieser first went to Czechoslovakia, where he was again an active player at Teplitzer FK and then to Poland, where he coached the Legia Warsaw team from October 1933 to September 1934 . After this interlude in the Polish capital, he moved to Chorzów in the south of the country for the next two years, where he won the Polish championship with the local club in 1934 and 1935. He then worked as a trainer in Luxembourg.

After 1945 back in Germany, Wieser trained among others at Bremerhaven 93 . His engagement there ended in the spring of 1950 when his team was accused of bribery after a defeat in Göttingen. He himself, called "Grandpa" by his players, was apparently not in the know, publicly distanced himself from the events and gave up his coaching position.
