Božo Bakota (born October 1, 1950 in Zagreb , Yugoslavia (now Croatia ), † October 1, 2015 in Graz ) was a Yugoslav national soccer player .

Career

Božo Bakota began his career at NK Zagreb , with whom he had to accept relegation from the 1st league of Yugoslavia in 1974, but made it back up in 1976. A total of three more seasons he played in midfield for Zagreb in the first division; in his best season in 1978 he also scored 10 goals. In the same year Božo Bakota came on November 15 to his only international match for Yugoslavia in a 4-1 victory over Greece . A year after the relegation of NK Zagreb, he followed his former coach Otto Barić to Austria to SK Sturm Graz .

At Sturm, Božo Bakota was Austrian runner-up in his first season in 1980/81 and won the Austrian top scorer's crown in 1981/82 with 24 goals this season . He complemented himself perfectly with Gernot Jurtin in the storm and was particularly known as a sure penalty taker . His greatest international success was reaching the quarter-finals of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup . Sturm lost 1-0 away to Nottingham Forest , equalized this result thanks to a Bakota goal in the second leg and was only eliminated after the 1-1 draw in extra time. Until 1986 Božo Bakota wore the storm dress and scored a total of 86 Bundesliga goals for the club.

Bakota died on his 65th birthday in Graz.
