Sanel Kuljić (born October 10, 1977 in Salzburg ) is a former Austrian football player .

Career

Sanel Kuljić began his career at the lower class SV Grödig (1985 to 1993), from where he moved in 1991 as a cooperation player to the youth team at SV Austria Salzburg . There he made the leap into the professional team and celebrated winning the Austrian championship title as a squad player with the violets in the 1996/97 season . Kuljić was unable to assert himself in the team under coach Heribert Weber and was handed over to the regional division PSV Schwarz-Weiß Salzburg . Although a possible great career seemed to be over, Kuljić managed to become a first division and even Austrian national player via the regional league and the second division, where he played at clubs such as SV Pasching , BSV Bad Bleiberg and LASK Linz .

From August 2003, Sanel Kuljić played for the Ried sports association and in the 2004/05 season achieved promotion to the Bundesliga by winning the title in the first division and becoming the outstanding top scorer with 34 goals and a new league record. These were the second most goals scored by a player in a professional league worldwide this season.

With the sports association Ried he reached fourth place in the championship in the 2005/06 season , where he was Austrian top scorer together with Roland Linz ( FK Austria Wien ) with 15 goals each in 36 championship games . Thus, Sanel Kuljić is the first player since Walter Schachner (seasons 1977/78 and 1978/79) to become top scorer in Austria's second highest and highest division for two consecutive years. He made his international debut on August 17, 2005 in a 2-2 draw against Scotland under team boss Hans Krankl .

In the 2006/07 season Sanel Kujic played for the Swiss super-league club FC Sion . He scored twelve goals in the Super League by March 2007. He shot half of them in the first three championship rounds in which he scored a "double pack" each time. During his time as a "Swiss legionnaire" he also had a strong performance in the national team against Switzerland , where he also headed a goal in the 2-1 victory. On March 8, 2007, the Salzburg resident unilaterally terminated his contract due to outstanding salaries and has been looking for a club ever since. Although he stayed without a club for several months, he was still used by Josef Hickersberger in the national team.

In June 2007 the striker was able to sign a contract with Wiener Austria . There he scored eleven goals in the league and five goals in the UEFA Cup as the club's top scorer. After the end of the season, Kuljić decided in the summer of 2008 to move to the first division at SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , which meant his early departure from the Austrian national team after 20 international matches. The SC Magna Wiener Neustadt led Sanel Kuljić as team captain to the championship title, the fourth of his career, with which he played in the Bundesliga again in the 2009/10 season.

His involvement with Magna was based on a contract that should automatically be extended for another year with 22 competitive appearances per season. This clause was apparently his undoing, because although he scored 8 hits in 14 missions, the club informed him that he would no longer be used. In December 2009, he refused a significant reduction in his salary, and in January 2010 the contract was finally canceled by mutual agreement.

With the termination of the contract, Kuljić announced a move to Neuchâtel Xamax in the Swiss Axpo Super League. He signed a contract until June 2011. After a year in Neuchâtel , Kuljic moved to the Greek first division club AE Larisa .

In 2012 he moved to the second division Kapfenberger SV .

On July 7, 2017, he joined the Lower Austrian eighth division ASV Baden . After five missions and one goal, he moved to Vienna's seventh division SU BWH Lok Janecka Hörndlwald (now Sportunion Schönbrunn) in January 2018 .

Offenses and prison sentences

In November 2013, Sanel Kuljić was arrested as part of a major football competition scandal. Together with Dominique Taboga , Thomas Zündel and seven other accused, he had manipulated 18 games. The Graz Regional Court for Criminal Matters saw Kuljić as the main culprit and sentenced him to five years in prison in October 2014 for serious fraud, extortion and coercion. In March 2017, however, he was released early for good conduct.

Kuljić was arrested again in September 2019, this time for trafficking in cocaine . On December 5, 2019, he was sentenced to one year of unconditional imprisonment for drug trafficking.
