Gernot Jurtin

Gernot Jurtin (born September 9, 1955 in Scheifling , Styria , † December 5, 2006 in Altenmarkt im Pongau , Salzburg ) was an Austrian football player . In the early 1980s, he and Božo Bakota formed the famous attack by SK Sturm Graz and reached eighth place with the Austrian national team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Life

After his family moved to Judenburg , Jurtin played as a teenager at the WSV Judenburg. From there he came to SK Sturm Graz in 1974 at the age of 18 . Right away he became a regular as a left striker. The blond mane and the jersey with the number 11 hanging out were his trademarks as well as his always friendly demeanor. He was considered a star without airs. Gernot Jurtin played a total of 373 competitive games for Sturm Graz and scored a total of 119 goals. He was the first Sturm player who could score more than 100 goals in the Austrian Bundesliga - only Ivica Vastić trumped him with 124 goals for SK Sturm.

In the 1980/81 season he was Austria's top scorer with 20 goals and was runner-up with the Graz team. On June 5, 1981, he scored five goals for a 7-0 victory over the Wiener Sport-Club . In the national team he came on twelve missions and scored it on June 17, 1981 with 5: 1 (2: 0) the gate to 5: 0 in the World Cup qualification in Linz against Finland . Jurtin was a member of the ÖFB team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain , which reached eighth place; he was used in the first game against Chile and then against Northern Ireland. - Another highlight in Graz was certainly the 1983/84 season, when Sturm advanced to the quarter-finals with Jurtin in the UEFA Cup and scored a goal in the 2-2 draw in Verona . The striker ended his career in 1987. After the end of his career, he ran a specialist store for tires and car accessories in Altenmarkt. On the night of December 6th, 2006 Gernot Jurtin died of cancer .
