Johann Georg Mozart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Georg Mozart (born May 4, 1679 in Augsburg ; † February 19, 1736 ibid) was a German bookbinder and the father of Leopold Mozart and the grandfather of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .

family

Johann Georg Mozart was the eldest son of the bricklayer Franz Mozart (1649–1694) and his wife Anna Haerrer († after 1703). After the death of his father, his brother Hans Georg (1647–1719) sent the 15-year-old to a bookbinder as an apprentice. Until 1715 he lived with his uncle. On October 17, 1708, in Friedberg , he married Anna Maria Banneger (1667–1718), the widow of his former Mr. August Banneger. She was twelve years older than Johann Georg and brought craftsmanship into the marriage; this procedure was absolutely common at that time, for young journeymen to marry rich and older master widows and thus to be well looked after.

Anna Maria gave birth to Johann Georg no children and died on May 16, 1718. Less than two months after the death of his wife, he married the weaver's daughter Anna Maria Sulzer (1696–1766) from Augsburg. The marriage resulted in nine children, of which only four sons and two daughters reached adulthood:

  • Johann Georg Leopold Mozart (born November 14, 1719 in Augsburg, † May 28, 1787 in Salzburg)
  • Johann Christian Mozart (* 1721 in Augsburg; † 1722 ibid)
  • Johann Christian Mozart (* 1722 in Augsburg; † before 1755)
  • Joseph Ignaz Mozart (born August 7, 1725 in Augsburg; † January 11, 1796 there)
  • Franz Alois Mozart (born July 19, 1727 in Augsburg; † June 14, 1791 ibid)
  • Maria Eleonora Mozart (* 1729 in Augsburg, † 1806)
  • Maria Dorothea Mozart (* 1731 in Augsburg; † 1731 ibid)
  • Theresia Franziska Mozart (* 1734 in Augsburg; † 1800)
  • Lorenz Anton Mozart (* 1735 in Augsburg; † 1736 ibid.)

Life

Johann Georg Mozart worked as a master bookbinder in a craftsman's house at today's Frauentorstrasse 30 ( Mozarthaus Augsburg ). Mozart's customers included the Jesuits and the Augsburg monasteries, such as St. George and the Holy Cross . He has been elected master of his craft several times .

In 1721 the family moved to a house in Jesuitengasse, and they moved from the parish of St. Georg, where Leopold was baptized, to the Augsburg Cathedral , which is why all other siblings were also baptized in the Augsburg Cathedral. Leopold and Johann Christian attended Jesuit schools . The Mozart family maintained close relationships with artistic and intellectual personalities of the time. Johann Georg Mozart had his son Leopold attend grammar school and then the lyceum . As a result, the young Leopold Mozart received an education above his level and the basis for his own artistic work.

Neither Johann Georg nor his wife Anna Maria had any direct influence on the life of their famous grandson. Johann Georg died in 1736 at the age of 56, 20 years before the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There is no record of any contact between Anna Maria and Wolfgang Amadeus during their lifetime. His son Leopold left Augsburg a year after his father's death and moved to Salzburg .
