history

Friedberg on a map of the Kingdom of Bavaria , 1809

Traces of settlement in the Friedberg city area from Roman times are due to archaeological findings from pottery and brickworks in the districts of Hügelshart, Rohrbach (here from the last third of the 3rd century AD), Stätzling (here from the end of the 3rd to the end of the 4th century AD) and Wulfertshausen.

The town was first mentioned in a document in a letter of protection from Staufer Konradin together with Duke Ludwig II to the citizens of Augsburg in 1264: It announced the construction of Fridberch Castle , which from then on served as border and customs security for the duchy Bayern against Schwaben and the free city should serve Augsburg. This function soon meant trouble with the powerful Augsburgers, who first burned the city in 1396. Its location often caused problems for the city, since the not infrequent armed conflicts between Bavaria and Augsburg or Swabia were mostly fought on the back of the city. In 1485, Balthasar Hubmaier , a leading Anabaptist personality of the Reformation , was born in Friedberg .

An upswing only came after Duchess Christine von Lothringen made Friedberg Castle her widow's seat in 1568, which turned the city into a center of Bavarian court life. In the following century, however, this prosperous time was brought to an abrupt end: in 1599 the plague raged terribly in the city, and the city was completely destroyed twice by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War . Apart from the castle and the city wall, no building is older than the town hall, which was built shortly after the end of the war. In the years that followed, Friedberg's economy flourished again when the numerous watchmakers who appeared made the city a focal point again: Friedberg was known to many watch enthusiasts at the time, and Friedberg watches are still in demand today. In 1753 the pilgrimage church Herrgottsruh was built, one of the most beautiful churches of the Bavarian Rococo . From 1754 to 1768 was the Bavarian Elector Max III. Joseph ran a faience factory in Friedberg Castle . In the 19th century Friedberg was the main beneficiary of the urgent housing shortage in prosperous Augsburg .

From 1938 to 1945 there was the NSV.-Kindergarten teacher and after-school care worker seminar in Friedberg near Augsburg , led by the youth leader Maria Krawinkel.

The city survived the two world wars without major damage. Until its dissolution in 1972, Friedberg was the district town of the Friedberg district .

Incorporations

On January 1, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Wiffertshausen was incorporated. On January 1, 1974, the previous parish pair and the main part of the dissolved parish Harthausen were added. Ottmaring, Rederzhausen and Wulfertshausen as well as areas of the dissolved communities of Derching and Stätzling followed on May 1, 1978.

Population development

Friedberg is the sixth largest city in Bavarian Swabia. At the census on May 9, 2011 Friedberg had 28,640 inhabitants. On December 31, 2019, 29,979 citizens lived in Friedberg. Between 1988 and 2019, the city grew from 25,668 to 29,979 by 4,311 inhabitants or 16.8%.

coat of arms

With the establishment of the city of Friedberg in 1264, a seal was also awarded that was very similar to today's coat of arms. The coat of arms was first mentioned in a document in 1297, making it one of the oldest coats of arms in Bavaria.

Coat of arms of Friedberg (Bavaria)
Blazon : "In blue on a green six-mountain, a red paw cross, flanked by two turned away growing silver lily stems."

Declaration of the coat of arms: The representation of the Sechsberg indicates the settlement in the hill country, whereby the blue background establishes a connection to the Duchy of Bavaria and the House of Wittelsbach . The cross in the middle symbolizes the market peace and thus also includes the city name. The jurisdiction or jurisdiction in Friedberg is symbolized with the lilies arranged on both sides.
