Ottmaring is one of 14 districts of Friedberg in the Aichach-Friedberg district . The place has about 1060 inhabitants and is located about two kilometers southeast of Friedberg at the Paardurchbruch .

In 1856 the Ottmaringen pastor Johann Peter Ring described the parish village as follows:

“Half an hour southeast of Friedberg is the friendly parish village of Ottmaring, leaning against a gentle hill. The whole valley meanders through the little river called the couple. At the top of the hill is the, from morning to evening completely free-standing and enclosed at a moderate distance from the rectory and its outbuildings "

history

Ancient and Middle Ages

Early historical finds show that people settled permanently in the area around Ottmaring more than 4,000 years ago, the place itself probably originated in the 6th century, whereby the name indicates the settlement of a Bavarian tribal elder named Ot (h) mar.

The first documentary mention of the parish seat of Ottmaring is in the oldest Salbuch of the Duchy of Bavaria , which is dated to the year 1240. There, under the Dachau office, two ducal farms and a hat to "Othmaringen" with their annual dues to the duke are written down: a total of three pigs, ten geese, 30 chickens, 300 eggs, rye and oats. According to the Salbuch of Duke Ludwig des Strengen, the same taxes had to be submitted to the Aichach office in 1280. In the first half of the 13th century the foundation of the parish church was built, which was surrounded by a wall .

There was also a small castle near the church , the seat of which was held by the Aresingers as ducal servants. However, this castle was destroyed in the Margrave War in 1462 together with 16 other villages in the Friedberg area, but it was not rebuilt.

Early modern age

Probably as a result of the Margrave War, extensive changes were made to the parish church in the 15th and 16th centuries: the church was raised and enlarged. In 1704 the English and Dutch invaded Bavaria , through which large parts of Ottmaring were burned down. The rectory was completely destroyed, the church remained undamaged. About ten years later the Ottmaringer rectory was built next to the church in the baroque style.

Modern

In 1796 there was further destruction in the place by fires during the Revolutionary Wars . Less than 50 years later, ten years after the renovation of the church and the rectory, there was a major fire in Ottmaring, which burned around ¾ of the village and the entire harvest. The pastor at the time, Johann Peter Ring, described this event in the following words:

“This and the next generation from Ottmaring will remember July 26th, 1841. The angry element usuristically grabs around, now jumping to the right, now to the left. The large barns of the parsonage are in bright flames, but even the most distant last houses in the village have been robbed of the non-sparing element "

There was also a major fire in 1865, which destroyed the economic and parish stalls and the church tower with the bells inside. Therefore, at the request of the residents, the volunteer fire brigade was founded seven years later in July 1872 . In 1881 the new church was consecrated. Despite efforts by the parish to preserve at least the choir and nave, the old building was demolished due to the damage caused by the previous fires.

In the years that followed the Second World War, several clubs were founded in Ottmaring, such as the theater group, the rifle guild and the Ottmaring sports club. In 1967 the ecumenical life center was established and one year later the Johann-Peter-Ring-Volksschule was opened. Ottmaring was also affected by incorporations : On July 1, 1971, January 1, 1972 and July 1, 1972, the previously independent municipalities of Rohrbach , Rinnenthal and Bachern were incorporated into the municipality, until Ottmaring itself on May 1, 1978 in the city of Friedberg was integrated.
