Hügelshart, district of Friedberg (Bavaria)

geography

Hügelshart is located around three kilometers southeast of Friedberg. While the upper village rises on an elongated hill that exceeds 500 meters above sea level halfway, the couple flows through the lower village in a winding course . Neighboring towns of Hügelshart are Friedberg , Ottmaring , Rederzhausen , Wiffertshausen , Rinnenthal , as well as the hamlets of Gagers and Bestihof. The place is connected to the road network of the Free State of Bavaria via State Road 2051 .

Surname

As might be expected, the name cannot be traced back to the hilly terrain. While "Hart" is the Middle High German word for forest, the word component "hill" is a corruption of the name Hugolin (little Hugo). Hügelshart literally means "settlement in the forest of a Hugolin".

history

While Bronze Age finds were made one kilometer east of the place , settlement is likely for the place itself at the latest in Roman times. Today's thoroughfare is reminiscent of the Via Julia , a street from Salzburg to Augsburg , in its name (Römerstraße) .

The first known documented mention of the place in 1126 mentions the possession of two prädien (goods) in "Hugolineshart" by the monastery of Sankt Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg .

St. Nicholas

The Romanesque church of St. Nikolaus an der Paar is one of the smallest but also one of the oldest churches in the area.
