The approximately 134 kilometers long pair is a right tributary of the Danube in Bavaria ( Germany ).

Origin of name

The river name is probably derived from an Indo-European word that means something like "to waft up". The name researcher Albrecht Greule has also put forward the hypothesis that the name derives from the deserted Celtic poppidium Manching, which the urbajuwarischen settlers would have given. Based on the meanings of the pre-Bavarian word * barre (empty area or enclosed, fortified area) and the condition of the oppidum at that time (area still empty and still visible today), Greule assumes that the early Bavarians had the place of the oppidum Called “Barre”, and this name was then transferred to the entire Paar river, as Manching is located at the old mouth of the Paar river. A third etymology would also be conceivable: The name could come from the Franconian administration. In the early Middle Ages, there were regional authorities in the Black Forest that were called "Baaren" and were formed to control tax income in the region. This resulted in counties after the fall of the independent Duchy of Alemannia in Frankish times. It would be conceivable that the various other localities with the names "Baar" or "Paar", of which there are in Upper Bavaria and Bavarian Swabia (e.g. Paar near Aichach and Baar near Rain) as well as in Switzerland and France ( Bar-Le-Duc) there are some that represent administrative centers from the early Middle Ages. In the case of the couple, it is fitting that the local history researcher Gerhard Krahn from Reichertshofen has reconstructed a network of paths from Roman or even pre-Roman times that converges to form a crossroads at the couple crossing from Baar - the last before the couple meets the Danube. Here, too, the name of an important settlement at the mouth of the river would have been transferred to the entire river.

geography

course

The river has its source in a terminal moraine belt north of the Ammersee near Kaltenberg Castle and then flows via Walleshausen to Egling and reaches the Lechfeld near Mering .

However, the pair does not flow into the Lech , but leaves the Lech Valley at Friedberg - Ottmaring with a bend to the northeast. This pair breakthrough was caused by receding erosion . Until about 10,000 years ago the Friedberger Ach was the lower reaches of the Paar, and today's lower Paar had its source near Ottmaring (see also river tapping ).

After the breakthrough, the couple continues through the hilly country between the Danube and Isar , which is called here as the historical name " Wittelsbacher Land ". At Dasing it crosses under the federal highway 8 . The two largest cities in their further course are Aichach and Schrobenhausen . At Reichertshofen , the couple enters the Ingolstadt basin , where they pass under the federal autobahn 9 at Manching and shortly afterwards they reach the alluvial forests of the Danube.

The pair originally flowed into the Danube across from Großmehring near Vohburg . However, regulations have changed this original estuary. The pair is led parallel to the Danube for flood protection reasons, passes the Irsching power plant and only flows into the Danube at Vohburg, about 6 km below the original mouth.

Tributaries

The couple is fed by the Steinach , the Eisenbach , the Ecknach that flows into Aichach , the Krebsbach , the Weilach that flows into Schrobenhausen and, after Markt Manching, the Sandrach , the last of the larger tributaries.
