The Sandrach (in the districts of Aichach-Friedberg and Neuburg-Schrobenhausen Donaumoos-Ach or just called Ach ) is a left tributary of the Paar that flows through the districts of Aichach-Friedberg and Neuburg-Schrobenhausen , the city of Ingolstadt and the district of Pfaffenhofen . The length of the river is about 48 kilometers.

history

The name Sandrach is derived from Sunder Ach , which means the southern Ach . Originally, the Sandrach in the Ingolstadt area was the southernmost of the three branches of the Danube and at the same time the main branch. Around 1363 the northern of the three arms was expanded to the main arm for commercial reasons on the instructions of Duke Stephan II , by diverting the water from the southern arm to the northern one. The demarcation between the diocesan borders between the dioceses of Eichstätt and Augsburg , which still exists today , dates back to this time when the Sandrach marked the main arm of the Danube . For a long time the Sandrach was also the border between the two duchies of Bavaria and Pfalz-Neuburg .

course

The water of today's Sandrach no longer comes from the Danube, but from the drainage channels of the Donaumoos , where the course of the Ach begins southwest of Pöttmes . Completely straightened, it continues, past Karlshuld to Weichering , where, apart from numerous straightening, it follows the course of the former southern branch of the Danube. Past the Ingolstadt districts of Zuchering, Spitalhof, Unterbrunnenreuth and Unsernherrn, the river now known as the Sandrach finally flows into the Paar north of Manching .
