Life

Former workshop of the Öberls in Friedberg

Johann Caspar Öberl was born in 1700. He was the son of Bartholomäus Öberl , whose sculpting workshop, Unterm Berg No. 21, he later took over. As a young man, Öberl came into conflict with the authorities several times and spent two nights in prison. In 1728 he married Maria Theresia Gölz from Friedberg. The couple apparently remained childless. Like his father, Öberl was a local baroque sculptor whose works can also be found beyond Friedberg. The typical Öberl handwriting is even more pronounced in the son: The figures appear heavy, but moved with little playful folds. The facial features appear tart and the figures have a sharp, characteristic nose and elegant hands and feet. After his death in 1767, Johann Caspar Öberl was buried near St. Jakob in Friedberg.
