The Passion Sunday ( Latin Dominica de passione "suffering Sonntag") is named after the Roman Missal of 1570 of the Palm Sunday preceding the fifth Sunday of Lent and after his Introit also Judica called. The Roman Missal from 1962 calls it "first Passion Sunday " ( Dominica I. Passionis ) and the following Sunday "second Passion or Palm Sunday" ( Dominica II. Passionis seu in palmis ). The missal in the 2002 version describes Passion Sunday as the 5th Sunday of Lent and Palm Sunday as "Palm and Passion Sunday" ( Dominica in palmis de Passione Domini ), but the older name of the fifth Sunday of Lent as "Passion Sunday " is still common.

From this Sunday, the crucifixes and crosses in the churches are traditionally covered with purple (dark) cloths. If there are triptychs and winged altars , these are often closed and show the simpler rear of the wings.

Liturgical characteristics

If Holy Mass is celebrated in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite , then from Passion Sunday to Maundy Thursday in the graded prayer of the Psalm Judica, in the Introitus and in the Psalm to the lavabo the Gloria Patri is omitted .
