Marc Janko (born June 25, 1983 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian soccer player . The striker was most recently under contract with FC Lugano in the Super League . From 2009 to 2011 he was team captain of the Austrian national team .
Career
Admira Wacker Mödling
Janko began his football career in 1990 at VfB Admira Wacker Mödling as a junior. In his youth he was often injured from extraordinary growth spurts . In 2003 he made the leap from the amateur squad to the senior team. He played his first game in the Austrian Bundesliga a year later on December 8, 2004 in the game against Grazer AK , when he was substituted on at half time and scored his first goal in the highest Austrian league in the 87th minute. In the spring of 2005 further missions followed and his winning goal in the away game against SV Austria Salzburg to the 0-1 final score. After a relatively successful season in Mödling, he moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg in the 2005/06 season .
Red Bull Salzburg
In Salzburg, after the club takeover by the beverage manufacturer Red Bull, many new players were hired and Janko initially had difficulties asserting himself against the broad competition. By spring 2006, however, he had fought for a regular place in the starting line-up and scored eleven goals in a total of 17 appearances this season. In the following season he was almost completely out of action due to injuries, but at the beginning of the season contributed two goals to Salzburg's first title win since 1997. He spent the rest of 2007 with rehabilitation and rehabilitation training in order to be fit again in spring 2008 and to recommend himself for the home European championships in summer. But the comeback failed for the time being and he received a rejection from team boss of the national team Josef Hickersberger .
Marc Janko liked the offensive game alignment that the new Salzburg coach Co Adriaanse launched. On the first day of the 2008/09 season he scored three goals and also gave one assist. On October 19, 2008 in the game against Altach , he met four times for the first time in a Oberhaus game. In this and the following round, he scored a total of seven times. On November 16, 2008, Janko became Red Bull Salzburg's record scorer with 25 Bundesliga goals , replacing Oliver Bierhoff , who had held the record with 23 goals since the 1990/91 season. At the end of the season, Janko was the top scorer with 39 goals. He was also named the world's best first division goalscorer in 2009 by the IFFHS .
After a low goal at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Janko again scored four goals in a Bundesliga match on October 4, 2009. In the UEFA Europa League , he also contributed one goal each in Salzburg's two wins against Lazio Rome and Villarreal CF , and two goals in the knockout phase against Standard Liège . He finished the season third on the list of goalscorers with 18 goals behind Steffen Hofmann (Rapid Vienna, 20 goals) and Roman Wallner (LASK / Red Bull Salzburg, 19 goals). During the season, however, there were already disagreements with the new coach Huub Stevens , who accused him of several defeats. One day after his third championship celebration with Salzburg, Janko indicated that he wanted to leave the club. In the summer of 2010 he finally switched to Twente Enschede . The transfer fee was seven million euros - the highest sum that was paid for an Austrian footballer until then.
Twente Enschede
Janko signed a four-year contract with the then Dutch champions Twente Enschede . In November 2012 he scored his 100th competitive goal and in the supplementary game of the Eredivisie against Heracles Almelo for the third time in his career four goals in a game in the top national league. In the 2011 cup final against Ajax Amsterdam , Janko came on as a substitute in the second half of extra time and scored the winning goal three minutes before the end to make it 3-2.
With Twente, Janko made his debut in the UEFA Champions League in the 2010/11 season and finished third with his team in the group stage, which meant they qualified for the UEFA Europa League . There he made it to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated against Villarreal . In the last game of the championship, Janko lost 3-1 with Twente against Ajax Amsterdam, making Twente only runner-up. He finished the championship as the most successful goalscorer of his team with 14 goals.
At the start of the 2011/12 season, Janko won the Dutch Supercup, the Johan Cruijff Schaal , for the second time . In the 2-1 victory over Ajax Amsterdam, he scored the 1-0 through a penalty. In the third round of the Champions League qualification , Janko scored both goals in a 2-0 home win over FC Vaslui . He also scored a brace in the Europa League group stage in a 4-1 win over Wisła Krakow . In the fifth group game against Fulham he was substituted on in the 79th minute and ten minutes later scored the 1-0 final for Twente. After losing his regular place to Luuk de Jong at the end of 2011 , he moved to FC Porto on the last day of the transfer period, on January 31, 2012 .
FC Porto
At FC Porto , the 2011 Europa League winner, Janko signed a contract until June 2015. This included a release clause of 20 million euros. At FC Porto he did not get the shirt number 21 as usual, but the 29. On February 5, 2012 in the league cup match against Vitória Setúbal , he made his debut and scored the goal to the 2-0 final score. In the Portuguese league , Janko scored his first goal in a 4-0 home win against União Leiria, also in his first appearance. He was able to win the championship with his team and had ten missions and scored four goals. In the League Cup, he was eliminated with Porto in the semifinals against Benfica Lisbon . In the Europa League , his team was eliminated against Manchester City in the sixteenth finals with a total score of 1: 6, although Janko was not eligible to play as he was already playing for his former club Twente Enschede this season.
In preparation for the new season of the Primeira Liga 2012/13 Janko tore a muscle fiber . Because of this injury and the fact that FC Porto had signed the Colombian center forward Jackson Martinez , Janko was no longer in the squad, whereupon he decided to change clubs.
Trabzonspor
During the summer break of 2012, Janko moved to the Turkish club Trabzonspor . He signed a three-year contract there until 2015 and played with the number 83. He made his debut on September 2, 2012 in the 0-1 away defeat by Gaziantepspor , where he came on in the 72nd minute. Janko scored his first goal on matchday 12 against Orduspor ; in the 2-1 away win, he scored the interim 1-0. After Janko's team failed to perform as they had hoped, coach Şenol Güneş was replaced by Tolunay Kafkas .
With the new coach, with whom he had already trained at Admira and who had also suggested him at Trabzonspor, Janko initially found a regular place. But after a 3-0 defeat by Fenerbahçe Istanbul on February 17, 2013, he was dismissed from the squad by Kafkas. For reasons not communicated, Janko was suspended and had to complete individual training. After Trabzonspor finished ninth at the end of the season and lost the Turkish Cup final , Kafkas was dismissed.
The new coach was Mustafa Reşit Akçay , who called Janko back to the team after almost seven months off. On matchday 5, September 23, 2013, in the 1-0 away win against Kayserispor , he was substituted on in the 85th minute. This was followed by a few more short assignments. On October 24, 2013, Janko was back in the starting line-up for the first time and scored the first goal in a 2-0 home win in the UEFA Europa League against Legia Warsaw . This was followed by another league assignment for Janko, but after that he was only very rarely in the squad. Only one more starting line-up in the Turkish Cup in the 1: 3 defeat against Balıkesirspor , in which Janko scored the only goal for his club and a league appearance was recorded for Janko. Janko then wanted to leave the club during the winter break, but Trabzonspor did not agree to a transfer until the end of the transfer period. A short time later, coach Akçay was dismissed after the club had lost 4-2 against Akhisar Belediyespor on matchday 19 of the Süper Lig and the team was only in the middle of the table. The new coach was Hami Mandıralı , who also used Janko at the beginning. In the first two games under his new coach he was substituted on and scored the decisive goal for the win against Kayserispor on his second appearance. On March 21, 2014, he gave his last game for Trabzonspor, where he was up to 79 minutes in action, in the 0-0 against Kasımpaşa Istanbul .
Sydney FC
In July 2014 Janko moved to the Australian A-League club Sydney FC . There he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2015 with an option to extend. As usual, he got the back number 21. He made his debut for Sydney FC on matchday 2 in a 3-2 home win in the derby against the Western Sydney Wanderers . He scored his first goal a round later in a 2-0 away win against Brisbane Roar with the goal to make it 1-0, a volley from 40 meters away. The A-League described Jankos goal as "one of the most outstanding goals we've seen in the Hyundai A-League". Janko finished the season with Sydney FC as runner-up and with 16 goals and two assists as top scorer of the A-League.
Sydney FC decided against extending the contract with Janko, which expired at the end of May, even though Janko had been voted Player of the Year because he was absent too often due to his national team appearances and the long trips that went with it.
FC Basel
In June 2015 Janko moved to the then Swiss champions FC Basel . He was given the shirt number 21. On the second game day of the league he made his debut in a 3-2 away win against Grasshopper Club Zurich and scored his first goal for the Basler. In the 4-2 victory over FC St. Gallen on March 13, 2016, he scored his first hat-trick for FC Basel. In April 2016, his contract term was extended by one year to June 2017, as he had played a certain number of games. Under coach Urs Fischer , Janko won the championship title with FCB at the end of the 2015/16 season . For the club it was the seventh title in a row and the 19th title in the club's history. In summary, he scored 16 goals and two assists in 20 league games in his first season for the Swiss club. He was third in the list of goalscorers behind Guillaume Hoarau (18 goals) and Munas Dabbur (19 goals). Janko led the scorers list for a long time. However, he tore a muscle fiber in mid-April 2016 and was injured for the rest of the season. The striker also reached the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League with the Basel team, scoring two goals and two assists in this competition.
At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Janko's club strengthened by storm and signed the Ivorian player Seydou Doumbia from AS Roma . The two were mostly used alternately during the season. At the end of the season, Janko and his club won the Swiss double for the first time since 2012, consisting of cup and championship titles. For the club it was the 8th championship title in a row and the 20th title in the club's history. Janko finished the championship with 13 goals and one assist in 24 games. While the Basler won all titles at national level, they were eliminated in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League .
At the beginning of May the new management team of FC Basel decided not to extend Janko's contract term for political reasons. The club wants to implement a new concept consisting of young players and local roots. FC Basel emphasized that the separation from Janko had nothing to do with his performance or behavior, because they just wanted to make people different.
Sparta Prague
At the beginning of June 2017, Janko signed a two-year contract with the Czech first division club Sparta Prague . With the team he was eliminated from the UEFA Europa League after the third qualifying round . In the Czech Cup round of 16 against Baník Ostrava , Janko scored his first goal for Sparta, but was also eliminated. In the championship he was mostly not in the squad apart from a few short appearances. In the 13th round he scored his only league goal for Sparta Prague with the goal to 1: 2 in the 2: 2 away game against FC Fastav Zlín . In this game on November 5, 2017, Janko was used for the last time. In total, he completed five league games for Sparta.
At the turn of the year, the club management advised Janko to change for financial reasons.
FC Lugano and end of career
At the beginning of February 2018 he was signed by FC Lugano and received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. Janko made his debut for the Swiss club, which was at risk of relegation at the time, on February 17, 2019 in a 1-0 home win against Grasshoppers Zurich . Two weeks later he scored his first goal, but this game was lost 2: 4 against the eventual champions, the BSC Young Boys . At the end of the season, Janko was able to prevent relegation from the Super League with his club, in which the club landed in 8th place. In addition, he contributed 2 goals in 12 league games.
At the beginning of the 2018/19 season , the striker played his last as a professional footballer. Janko was mainly used as a substitute and had to contend with some injuries during the season. At the end of the season, his team reached 3rd place in the table, which entitled the team to participate in the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League . Janko was substituted on 8 times over the entire season, but could not score a goal. He scored his only and last goal on February 28, 2019 in the Cup quarter-finals against FC Thun . However, this game was lost 3-2. At the beginning of July 2019, he finally ended his active career.
Career after playing
A few days after the end of his active career, it was announced that Janko will work as a TV expert for Sky Austria from the 2019/20 season . For the pay TV broadcaster, he will analyze the matches in the Austrian Bundesliga and the Champions League . In addition, he has been writing columns for the courier at regular intervals since September 2019 .
National team
Janko scored both goals in the 2-1 victory of the Austrian U-21 national team in 2005 against the English U-21 team.
Janko made his debut for the Austrian national team on May 23, 2006 in the international match against Croatia . He was in the extended squad for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland, but was removed from the squad by coach Josef Hickersberger shortly before the start of the tournament . Under the new team boss Karel Brückner , Janko made his comeback in the national team after the EM. In the friendly against Italy he scored his first goal in team dress, in the qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup against France and Serbia he also contributed one goal each. He also scored twice against the Faroe Islands and scored one goal each against Lithuania and in the away game against France. In total, Janko scored six goals for Austria in seven qualifying games.
In qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2012 , Janko initially didn't score a single goal. After two years without a goal for the national team, he scored two goals in the 4-1 away win against Azerbaijan in October 2011. After qualifying in Group A, he ranked fourth with Austria, with five appearances and two goals.
While Marc Janko was not used at Trabzonspor, the national team coach Marcel Koller relied on him. He scored important goals in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup . In June 2013 he scored the 2-0 goal in a 2-1 home win against Sweden . In summary, Janko made seven appearances, three goals and one assist in qualifying. In the end, Austria finished third behind Germany and Sweden and only had to admit defeat 1: 2 against Sweden on the penultimate matchday.
After qualifying, Janko was able to continue his good performances in the national team and scored the Austrian goal in the following international matches against the USA (1: 0) and Uruguay (1: 1).
In qualifying for the European Championship 2016 , the national team became group winners and qualified directly for a European championship for the first time. Janko scored at least one goal against all opponents in the group. In summary, he scored seven goals in nine games and gave two assists. His overhead kick for a 1-0 away win against Russia was voted Goal of the Year 2014/15 by the Austrian television broadcaster ORF Eins .
On August 12, 2009 Janko wore the captain's ribbon for the first time in the friendly against Cameroon ; from March 3, 2010 he was the official captain of the Austrian selection for two and a half years.
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Austria's squad. The team was eliminated as bottom of the table; Janko played against group opponents Hungary for 66 minutes in the first game, he was not used in the second group game and Marcel Koller came on him in the second half in the last group game against Iceland.
After the Koller era, Janko initially played no role in the line-up of the new coach Franco Foda , but was later not considered due to an injury and lack of match practice, but testified to his constant availability several times. In the squad of Nationsleague Group B, Janko was surprisingly re-nominated in the last game as a replacement for the failed Guido Burgstaller and Michael Gregoritsch . Janko was used as a joker in the game against Northern Ireland, where he was able to record a shot on goal.
In the qualification for the 2020 European Championship, which begins in 2019 , Janko was again surprisingly nominated after both Burgstaller and Gregoritsch had suffered injuries beforehand. Janko came in as a joker in the game against Poland in the 81st minute when the score was 0: 1 for Poland, but could not use a big chance after an outstanding cross from Maximilian Wöber .
In the subsequent away game against Israel Janko was substituted on in the 60th minute when the score was 1: 3. This was also his last international match, as he ended his career a little more than three months later.
