Michael Konsel (born March 6, 1962 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian football player .

Club career

Through his grandfather, he came to Fortuna 05, a traditional Viennese club in Döbling , at the age of six , where he first began to play as the left outside deck. When he was around nine years old, he took up the position of goalkeeper for the first time , which he would hold for the rest of his football career. At the age of 16 Konsel moved to FC Kritzendorf, where he immediately became the goalkeeper of the fighting team.

The then coach of First Vienna FC 1894 , Peter Müller, finally guided the 19-year-old talent to the traditional Viennese club on Hohe Warte. In 1982 Konsel became reserve goalkeeper in the U21 team and a year later the third goalkeeper in the Vienna team. Only half a year later, the coach nominated him as the new No. 1.

In January 1985 Konsel moved to SK Rapid Vienna in Hütteldorf . In the same year he made it with Rapid for the first time in the European Cup final of the cup winners, where he benefited from the fact that Rapids standard goalie Herbert Feurer was injured, and was called up for the first time in the Austrian national soccer team . Michael Konsel stayed with Rapid for 12 years and played 395 championship games, 45 cup games and 42 European cup games during this time. Overall, he was three times Austrian champion with Rapid (1986/87, 1987/88, 1995/96), three times Austrian cup winner (1984/85, 1986/87, 1994/95) and twice reached the final in the European Cup winners' cup (1984 / 85, 1995/96). Due to his brilliant performance in the Hütteldorf goal, he became the favorite of many Rapid fans, who also called him the "Panther of Hütteldorf". With the aforementioned 395 games, Konsel is the player with the third-most championship games for Rapid behind Peter Schöttel and Steffen Hofmann .

In 1997 he moved to AS Roma in the Italian Serie A , where he was voted the best goalkeeper in the league in his first season. Within a very short time he became the favorite of Roma fans, who gave him the nickname "Pantera". After participating in the second soccer World Cup in 1998, Michael Konsel had to undergo an operation on his left Achilles tendon . However, he fought his way back after this operation and celebrated his comeback in the goal of AS Roma in April 1999. His last move took place in autumn 1999 to AC Venice, where he played for another year. Michael Konsel ended his active football career on January 28, 2002.

National team

In the Austrian national team Konsel completed 43 international matches and took part in two World Cup finals ( 1990 Italy and 1998 France ). At the finals in Italy he acted as a substitute goalkeeper, at the one in France he was number 1 himself and made three World Cup appearances. He played his first international match on October 16, 1985 in Linz, when he was used in the 3-0 friendly game against Yugoslavia (then apostrophized by team boss Branko Elsner as "No. 2 behind Klaus Lindenberger " - Lindenberger had to pass due to injury).
It wasn't until ten years later that he became number 1 for a long time. He celebrated his departure from the national team in front of 48,000 fans in the Ernst Happel Stadium in a friendly against the 1998 World Cup champions in France.
