Sebastian Prödl (born June 21, 1987 in Graz ) is an Austrian football player .

Career

Sebastian Prödl played for SV Kirchberg and SV Feldbach in his youth and moved to SK Sturm Graz in 2002 . He made his debut for Sturm in the Austrian Bundesliga on December 9, 2006 in the 0-1 away defeat against SV Mattersburg . Five months later, on May 9, 2007, he scored his first Bundesliga goal for Sturm Graz. The headed goal to 1-0 against SCR Altach also meant victory for his team. Prödl became an integral part of the central defense of Sturm Graz in the 2007/08 season and played a part in qualifying for the UI Cup .

For the 2008/09 season he moved to Germany to Werder Bremen . He signed a contract until June 30, 2012. On August 9, Prödl made his competitive debut in the Werder jersey at the game Eintracht Nordhorn against Werder Bremen. He was in the starting line-up for this first round DFB Cup game. The game ended with a 9-3 win for Bremen. On August 16, he made his Bundesliga debut at the away game in Bielefeld . In the last game of the first half of 2008 against VfL Wolfsburg , the Austrian injured his ankle , which is why he missed the winter preparation and training camp in Belek .

On March 18, 2009, he scored his first competitive goal for Werder in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup . In the second leg against AS Saint-Étienne he scored the 1-0 opening goal at 2-2. Prödl reached the final with Werder in the further course of the competition, which they lost, however, 1: 2 nV against the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk . Between June and July 2007 he took part as the captain of the Austrian U-20 national team at the 2007 Junior World Cup in Canada , where they finished fourth. Due to his performance in Canada, he was selected by La Gazzetta dello Sport in the tournament's All-Star Team . He scored one goal and was on the field in all eight games for the full playing time.

Prödl took part in the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland , where he was used in two games. He played through the games against the selection of Croatia and Poland . In the game against Poland he was brought down by Mariusz Lewandowski in the penalty area. Ivica Vastić converted the due penalty shortly before the end of the game to 1: 1. Since Prödl saw the yellow card in both games, he was suspended in the third group game against Germany .
