Mariusz Lewandowski [ ˈmarʲuʃ lɛvanˈdɔfsci ] (born May 18, 1979 in Legnica ) is a former Polish football player and today's coach.

Career

Mariusz Lewandowski started playing soccer at the age of nine. He played for the youth team of Zagłębie Lubin , where his father was also the youth and team coach. Coach Mirosław Dragan appointed him to the professional squad of Zaglebie Lubin when he was 18. On March 15, 1997 he made his debut in the Ekstraklasa when he came on in the 46th minute for Paweł Piotrowski. That was the only game for Lewandowski in the 1996/97 season. He played for Zaglebie Lubin until 2000. In three and a half years he played 36 times for Zaglebie Lubin and remained without a goal.

In the winter break of 2000 Lewandowski moved to competitor Dyskobolia Grodzisk and made his debut on March 5, 2000 against Pogoń Szczecin . A week later he was sent off the field for the first time . The next season he scored his first goal in the Ekstraklasa ; he scored on November 11, 2000 in the game against Śląsk Wrocław , which ended 1-1. During the season he was always in the starting line-up and played through every game.

In the summer of 2001 Levandowski moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine . He was the first Polish player to play in the Ukrainian league . In Donetsk he got the shirt number 18 and made his first game on July 20, 2001. On May 12, 2002 he scored his first goal in the game against Illichivets Mariupol . In the 2001/02 season Lewandowski was with his club for the first time Ukrainian champions and cup winners. Lewandowski played a full 120 minutes in the cup final; Shakhtar Donetsk beat Dynamo Kiev 3-2. In the autumn of 2002 he made his debut in the UEFA Champions League , but only as a reservist. That season he was runner-up and vice-cup winner.

On May 30, 2004 Lewandowski won the Ukrainian Cup for the second time and two months later lost with Donetsk the final of the Ukrainian Supercup against Dynamo Kiev 5: 6 a.s. In the 2004/05 season he played again with Shakhtar Donetsk in of the UEFA Champions League and were again Ukrainian champions after three untitled years.

During the 2008/09 season he played in the starting lineup and was runner-up at the end of the season. On May 20, 2009, he won the UEFA Cup against Werder Bremen (2-1) and played the entire 120 minutes.

In the summer of 2010 Lewandowski signed a three-year contract with the second division PFK Sevastopol . In the same season he rose with his team in the first division and a season later from again. In the 2012/13 season he was with his club champions of the second division and rose again. There he played for three years, played 81 games and scored 14 goals. He has been without a club since November 27, 2013.

National team

Lewandowski played from 2000 to 2001 for the Polish U21s , for which he played 18 games and scored two goals. The Polish national coach Jerzy Engel put him on February 10, 2002 in the game against the Faroese national football team for the first time in the A-Elf . It was only after the 2002 World Cup that he was nominated again by the new coach Zbigniew Boniek and he played four games in the qualifications for Euro 2004 .

Lewandowski scored his first goal on November 16, 2005 against Estonia , Poland won the game 3-1.

He took part in the qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup and was appointed to the squad for the tournament. He played in the first game of the World Cup against Ecuador . Poland was eliminated from the tournament as third in the group. After the unsuccessful World Cup, Leo Beenhakker took over the Polish national football team . After successfully qualifying for Euro 2008 , Lewandowski was nominated for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland. Poland eliminated in the preliminary round as bottom of the group.

After a four-year break, Lewandowski was called back to the national team on September 27, 2013 by coach Waldemar Fornalik .

Private

Lewandowski married in 2002 and has two sons with his wife (born in 2005 and 2008).

Lewandowski completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic and then broke off a school career in the business sector because of his football career. He is fluent in Polish , Ukrainian and Russian .
