David Olatukunbo Alaba (born June 24, 1992 in Vienna ) is an Austrian soccer player . The defensive all-rounder has been active in the Austrian national team since 2009 and won the triple of championship , cup and Champions League with FC Bayern Munich in 2013 and 2020 , as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup . He has been under contract with Real Madrid since July 2021 .

Alaba completed his football training at FK Austria Wien , where he was already on the bench of the Bundesliga team at the age of 15 and was used in the second team. At the age of 16 he moved to Germany for FC Bayern Munich , from the winter break 2009/10 he was in the squad of the professional team, apart from a six-month loan to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

As an offensive and defensive flank player, mostly on the left side, a central defender, a central midfielder and a " tens " player, Alaba is a versatile player. From the 2014/15 season onwards, the reinterpretation of the libero position was attributed to him several times .

Life

Alaba's mother is from the Philippines , his father George from Nigeria . His father used to be a rapper and in the late 1990s he had some successes as the male part of the pop dance duo Two in One - their Indian song was number two in the Austrian charts in 1999 - and worked as a DJ in Viennese clubs until 2011 . Like his sister Rose , who was accepted into the popstars girl group BFF in 2011, Alaba was born and raised in Vienna.

Together with coach Andreas Wölkhammer, Alaba trained the U11 team of FC Bayern Munich in the 2008/09 season.

In the film And Front Helps God (2016) by David Kadel , David Alaba is one of the main actors alongside players like Davie Selke , Jürgen Klopp , Daniel Didavi , Anthony Ujah , Sven Schipplock , Elias Kachunga , Roger de Oliveira Bernardo and Heiko Herrlich .

In the comedy film Fack ju Göhte 3 , which appeared on October 26, 2017, Alaba was seen alongside his teammates from FC Bayern Munich Mats Hummels and Joshua Kimmich as an extra.

In early December 2019 he became the father of a son.

In May 2021, Alaba acquired a 2 percent stake in its financially weak youth club FK Austria Wien with a sum of 500,000 euros .

youth

Up to the age of ten, Alaba played for the club in his hometown Aspern in the 22nd district of Donaustadt , the SV Aspern , and then - at the request of his father, who recognized his talent - moved to the 10th district of Vienna-Favoriten in the cooperative school of the FK Austria Wien and in their youth department. He was then accepted at the " Frank Stronach Academy".

Under coach Georg Zellhofer , Alaba made his first appearance in the professional team of Wiener Austria on January 18, 2008 in the preparatory game against the FAC team for Vienna . In the following training camp of the professional team in Spain, three more appearances in preparatory games followed. Under the new coach Dietmar Constantini , Alaba was called up on April 13, 2008 for the away game at SCR Altach as a substitute for the first time in the Bundesliga without him being used. In the same week he played his first game for the second team in the First League , Austria's second-highest division.

FC Bayern Munich (2008-2010)

In summer 2008 he moved to the youth department of FC Bayern Munich. There he started the season in the B-Junior Bundesliga for the U17s in a 3-1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt and scored two goals. Just two weeks later at the away game in Ulm, however, he was sent off after being assaulted and then suspended for several games. After the suspension had expired, from the beginning of October at the age of 16, he mostly played for the U19s in the A-Juniors Bundesliga , for which he played over 90 minutes in his second appearance on October 25, 2008 and the last goal to make it 8-0 - Victory over SSV Jahn Regensburg contributed.

As already announced by coach Hermann Gerland in October 2008 that Alaba wanted to integrate Alaba into the second team for the 2009/10 season , his successor Mehmet Scholl put this into practice. After surviving minor injuries, Alaba started playing regularly as a regular player for the Bayern amateurs in the 3rd division from August 2009 . Occasionally he also trained with the first team under Louis van Gaal and was used there in friendly matches. With the substitution in the 59th minute in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on February 10, 2010 - at 17 years and 232 days as the youngest player to date - he received his first appearance in a competitive game of the professional team of FC Bayern Munich .

Two more debuts followed shortly afterwards: first his first first division game on March 6, 2010 in the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern and 1. FC Köln , when he replaced the injured Diego Contento from the 73rd minute . Three days later he was in the starting line-up of the Champions League in the round of 16 against Fiorentina . He is also the youngest Bayern player to play in the Champions League. Bavaria's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised Alaba, who had the most ball contacts: “He played very well. You couldn't tell that it was his first game for Bayern Munich from the start. "

Alaba was not used by coach van Gaal for the professionals in his traditional position in midfield, but as a left defender . "He's a left full-back, even if he doesn't think so," emphasized van Gaal. With Bayern, he won the double of the German championship and cup in 2010 and made it to the final of the Champions League . The latter, however, was lost 2-0 to Inter Milan , although Alaba was not used.

Shortly after his 18th birthday, Alaba signed a professional three-year contract with Bayern on June 30, 2010.

TSG Hoffenheim (2010/11)

During the 2010/11 winter break, Luiz Gustavo moved from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to Bayern Munich . In return, Alaba moved to Hoffenheim on loan for the second half of the season. On January 23, 2011 (19th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal with his goal to make it 2-2 in the home game against FC St. Pauli . For Hoffenheim he played 17 Bundesliga games in which he scored two goals.

FC Bayern Munich (2011-2021)

during training on the grounds of FC Bayern Munich (2017)

During the summer break of 2011, Alaba extended his contract with Bayern until 2015. He returned to Bayern for the 2011/12 season and played, often as a substitute, in all competitions in the first half of the season. This changed in the second half of the season, in which he ousted Rafinha from the starting eleven. On October 23, 2011, he scored his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern in a 2-1 defeat against Hannover 96. At the end of 2011 he was voted Player of the Year by the coaches of the Austrian Bundesliga . He was the youngest player and only the third overseas player to win this election. At 19 years, nine months and 21 days, the Viennese is the youngest Bayern player to date to have reached the 50-game mark; he replaced Georg Schwarzenbeck , who had done this in 1968 at the age of 20 years and 17 days. Alaba had 30 appearances in the 2011/12 season in which he scored two goals.

At the end of April 2012, Alaba reached the Champions League final with Bayern Munich. He played through in both semi-finals against Real Madrid , scored the first goal on penalties, but was suspended for the final against Chelsea (Bayern lost 4: 3 on penalties) because of three yellow cards in the current competition. He made eleven appearances this Champions League season .

In July 2012 he suffered a stress fracture in his left foot in a test match against SSC Napoli . On October 11, 2012 he made his comeback in a test match during an international break against SpVgg Unterhaching . After a brief stint in the following Bundesliga match at Fortuna Düsseldorf , Alaba returned to the starting line-up; he was used in all remaining games of the first half of the season.

On December 5, 2012, Alaba scored his first Champions League goal in the 83rd minute of the game against BATE Baryssau, with a score of 3-0. In the Bundesliga game on February 9, 2013 against FC Schalke 04 , he scored his first double goal success in the Bundesliga. On matchday 28, he secured the championship early on with FC Bayern . After not being used in the Champions League finals in 2010 and 2012, he became the first Austrian to play a Champions League final in May. FC Bayern won 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium in London. By winning the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart a few days later, Alaba won the triple .

David Alaba (2013)

On the 27th matchday of the 2013/14 season , FC Bayern Munich and Alaba were mathematically established as the German champions, earlier than any other team in the Bundesliga. For the DFB Cup final in 2014, he was out of action due to an abdominal muscle strain that he had contracted shortly before in training.

In the Champions League game against AS Roma on November 5, 2014, Alaba suffered a partial tear of the inner ligament and an inner meniscus injury in her right knee, was out until the winter break and then returned to the team. In an international match of the Austrian national team on March 31, 2015 against Bosnia-Herzegovina , Alaba tore an inner ligament and was out until the end of the season.

On October 4, 2015, Alaba received a yellow card for the first time in a 5-1 home win over Dortmund after 105 Bundesliga games without a warning. On April 16, 2016, with a 3-0 win over Schalke 04, he became the youngest player in Bayern to win his 100th Bundesliga victory . On May 7, 2016, he became German champions for the fourth time in a row with the Munich team. In addition, by winning the cup on May 21, 2016 in the final against Borussia Dortmund (4-3 on penalties), he won the double for the fourth time and in 2017 with FC Bayern the fifth German championship in a row, followed by two more in the following two years.

Due to the injury-related failures of the central defenders Niklas Süle , Lucas Hernández and Benjamin Pavard , Alaba played in central defense from the 10th matchday of the 2019/20 season , the last game of head coach Niko Kovač . In his place, Alphonso Davies took over the left-back position. This constellation persisted even under Kovač's successor, Hansi Flick . During the winter break, both Alaba and Davies were ranked by kicker on their positions in the ranking of German football as one of the best players. In 2020 he won his ninth Bundesliga title, setting Franck Ribéry's record . After winning the DFB Cup and the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League , he again achieved the triple with FC Bayern after 2013. On December 1, 2020, Alaba played their 400th competitive game for Bayern Munich in a 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid and led the team as captain for the first time.

Alaba's contract with FC Bayern Munich was extended to June 30, 2021.

On February 16, 2021, Alaba announced that it no longer wanted to extend the contract afterwards.

In 2021 he won the tenth German championship in his last season , making him the record holder together with Thomas Müller .

Real Madrid (since 2021)

After his contract in Munich ended, Alaba moved to the Spanish Primera División for Real Madrid for the 2021/22 season , where he received a contract that ran until June 2026. On October 24, 2021, he scored his first goal for Real Madrid on matchday 10 in a 2-1 away win against FC Barcelona .

National team

After Alaba had already distinguished himself in the Austrian U17 , he was appointed to the U-21 national team for the first time at the age of 17 on August 12, 2009 by Andreas Herzog , in which he made his debut on September 5, 2009 in the game against Scotland and contributed to the 1-0 victory by submitting this goal. This was followed by three missions over 90 minutes, twice against Albania (September 9 and November 13, 2009) and once against Azerbaijan (October 10, 2009). Herzog was enthusiastic about his skills: “The boy has already come a long way. A wonderful left foot with great movements and already very mature at the age of 17. It is a jewel, a blessing for Austrian football. "

His first appearance in the senior team Alaba came on 14 October 2009, team boss Dietmar Constantini in World Cup qualifier in Austria against France in the 1: 3 defeat at the Stade de France - in the 80 minutes he was for Christian Fuchs substitute . At the age of 17 years and 112 days, he was considered the youngest national player in the history of the Austrian national team until research in 2020 revealed that goalkeeper Ernst Joachim was exactly 172 days younger when he made his debut on November 4, 1917. The background for the early deployment was the fact that he could theoretically have played for the Philippines or Nigeria and should therefore play for Austria early on, so that he would then no longer be eligible to play for any other association. Team boss Constantini justified his commitment, among other things, by stating that he wanted to pre-empt Germany, even though the DFB would not have been able to poach him until Alaba's 23rd birthday at the earliest, according to the FIFA statutes in force at the time. On October 26, 2009, Alaba commented on the rumors in an interview with the German sports magazine kicker : “There was an inquiry from the Philippines in the summer, but Nigeria never got in touch. And Germany would never have been an issue anyway. I have absolutely no relation to it. "

At the end of May 2010, Alaba played for the U-19 national team in the European Championship qualifying tournament against Switzerland, Serbia and Denmark and thus helped the Austrian team to qualify for the U-19 European Championship 2010 in France , for which he was on 5. July 2010 was appointed to the 18-man squad by coach Andreas Heraf . In the narrow 2: 3 opening defeat against England, Alaba scored the next goal to 1: 2. He was also used in the 5-0 defeat against France. However, he did not complete the third group game because he had to play for FC Bayern II in the third division. From August 2010 he played again for the U-21 team.

On October 16, 2012, Alaba scored his first international goal for the senior national team in the course of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup against the selection of Kazakhstan with the goal to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute. He was also one of the goalscorers in the qualifying matches against the Faroe Islands , Ireland and Sweden and in the second leg against Ireland in 2013.

On May 12, 2016, national coach Marcel Koller appointed David Alaba to the 2016 European Championship squad . As a regular player, he played all three group games, but retired with the team with only one point as bottom of the table. In May 2021 he was appointed to Austria's provisional squad for the 2021 European Championship and finally made it back into the final squad with which he made it to the round of 16. During the tournament he was used in all four Austrian games, in which he always led the team as captain.
