Parallel to his football career, he passed the Abitur at the Wirtemberg-Gymnasium in Stuttgart with an average grade of 1.7.

RB Leipzig

From the A-youth of VfB Stuttgart Kimmich was the 2013/14 season from the third division promoted RB Leipzig committed. For the 2015/16 season he was signed by FC Bayern Munich , with Kimmich receiving a contract that initially ran until June 30, 2020. Most of the fee went to VfB Stuttgart, which bought back Kimmich's transfer rights from RB Leipzig via a contract option and sold it directly to FC Bayern Munich. Alexander Zorniger , who had become head coach of VfB for the 2015/16 season, assessed the transfer of Kimmich in November 2015 as "a fatal wrong decision" due to his good sporting development in Munich. In his first season, Kimmich came under coach Pep Guardiola in changing positions in midfield and defense, played 23 of the 34 league games and started 15 times. With the team he became German champion. On May 21, 2016 he was in the cup final against Borussia Dortmund in Berlin . He was on the starting grid; FC Bayern won 4-3 on penalties , with Kimmich being the only Bayern player unable to convert his penalty. He won the double with it . He was also used several times in the Champions League, partly on the starting line-up, but was not taken into account in the semi-finals against Atlético Madrid , in which Bayern were just beaten .

Also in the 2016/17 season , now under coach Carlo Ancelotti , he was barely considered in many "big" games, such as in the Champions League knockout round against Arsenal or in the quarter-finals when they were eliminated against Real Madrid and the DFB Cup - Semi-final against Borussia Dortmund, which was lost 2: 3. With six goals in 27 league games, he contributed to winning the German championship in 2017. With this title, long-time Bayern captain Philipp Lahm resigned and ended his career.

Kimmich succeeded Lahm in the position of right-back in the 2017/18 season and established himself as a regular player. With FC Bayern he was again German champion, in the Champions League the club was eliminated again by Real Madrid, this time in the semi-finals, with Kimmich scoring a goal in both games, and the final in the DFB Cup was lost to Eintracht Frankfurt .

In the 2018/19 season , now under coach Niko Kovač , he continued to act mostly as a right-back, but was increasingly used in the sixth position in the defensive midfield . In what is now his fourth season at FC Bayern, he was able to hold the championship trophy for the fourth time in the Allianz Arena and then on Marienplatz , plus the victory in the DFB Cup against his former team RB Leipzig, making him his second in 2019 Double won. In the Champions League failed Kimmich with Bayern already in the second round at the eventual winners Liverpool . In the second leg he was suspended after his third yellow card in the competition.

In the 2019/2020 season , Kimmich was mainly used in defensive midfield, also under Kovac's successor Hansi Flick . In 2020 the double from the championship and the cup could be defended. He also won the Champions League in the final against Paris Saint-Germain on August 23, 2020 , in which he assisted Kingsley Coman's 1-0 winner . So he won the triple with Bayern .

His contract runs until June 30, 2023.

He scored his first international goal on September 4, 2016 in Oslo with the 2-0 goal in the 45th minute in a 3-0 win in the qualifying game for the 2018 World Cup against Norway .

There he took over the captaincy of the German national team for the first time in the third group game against Cameroon after the substitution of Julian Draxler . He was the only German player who was on the pitch in all five tournament games for the entire season. On July 2, 2017, he won the Confederations Cup with the DFB-Elf by beating Chile 1-0 in the final .
