Mario Götze (born June 3, 1992 in Memmingen ) is a German soccer player . The midfielder, who was mainly trained at Borussia Dortmund , is currently without a club. In the final of the 2014 World Cup , he scored the 1-0 winner against Argentina in extra time after submission by André Schürrle .

Life and family

Götze was born in 1992 as the second of three sons in Memmingen, Swabia . Together with his brothers Fabian (* 1990) and Felix (* 1998), who are also soccer players, he first lived in the Allgäu town of Ronsberg . At the age of three, Götze and his family moved to Houston , Texas , USA , because his father had received a research grant for digital signal processing at Rice University from the Humboldt Foundation . A year and a half later, the family moved to Memmingen because Fabian started school. In 1997 the family moved to Dortmund because Götze's father had accepted the chair for data technology at the Technical University of Dortmund . Mario Götze attended the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium in Dortmund's Hombruch district from the 5th to the 10th grade . In 2008 he switched to the Goethe -Gymnasium in the Hörde district , where he obtained the technical college entrance qualification in 2010 (school part after grade 12). In addition to his professional career, he completed a commercial internship in the BVB office from 2010 to 2011.

Götze has been in a relationship with Ann-Kathrin Brömmel (* 1989) since 2012 and has been married to her since May 2018. In 2020 they became parents of a son.

In August 2020 Götze was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for his social commitment .

Club career

youth

Mario Götze started playing football at SC Ronsberg in the Ostallgäu district at the age of three . After moving to Dortmund, he continued his career at FC Eintracht Hombruch (now Hombrucher SV 09/72) and then moved to Borussia Dortmund . Like his brother Fabian , he went through almost all the youth departments, played in the A-Juniors Bundesliga and was in the final of the DFB-Juniors Club Cup as well as in the final of the German A-Jugend- Mastery . Although the games against SC Freiburg and 1. FSV Mainz 05 were lost, Götze then received the Fritz Walter gold medal in the U17 age group.

Breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund

Götze in the Borussia jersey, 2013

On November 21, 2009, at the age of 17 years and five months, he made his debut in the Bundesliga when he played Jakub Błaszczykowski in a goalless draw against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the 88th minute on matchday 13 of the 2009/10 season replaced. He is the ninth youngest player in the Bundesliga up to this point. On August 29, 2010, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 3-1 away win at VfB Stuttgart . On September 16, 2010 Götze scored two goals in the Europa League group game at Karpaty Lviv with the 2-0 and the 4-3 winning goal in stoppage time in his first European Cup game. He was also regularly in the starting line-up in the following competitive games and stood out for his good performance. During the season Götze became a regular player and an important part of the team. He had six goals and 16 assists. After winning the championship in the 2010/11 season , it was announced at the end of August 2011 that Arsenal FC reportedly offered 40 million euros for Mario Götze, but Borussia Dortmund rejected this offer. Mario Götze would have become the most expensive German player in history. On March 27, 2012, Götze extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2016. However, the contract contained an exit clause that allowed him to change the transfer fee of 37 million euros.

Götze became German champions for the second time in his career with Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2011/12 season , but was hardly used in the record second half of his club because he suffered from pubic bone inflammation from matchday 17 to 31 . He only experienced the victory in the DFB Cup 2011/12 and thus the double from the bench. In the 2012/13 season Götze was again an important part of the Dortmund offensive game. However, he could not build on the successes from previous years with the team. In the championship, Borussia finished second behind FC Bayern Munich , 25 points behind , and in the cup competition they were defeated by Bayern in the quarter-finals. But Götze and his teammates surprisingly reached the final of the Champions League , but had to admit defeat to Bayern here too.

Change to FC Bayern Munich

Götze at FC Bayern, 2014

For the 2013/14 season , the 21-year-old Götze used his release clause of 37 million euros and moved to FC Bayern Munich . In the weeks and months after the announcement of the change, there was heavy criticism in the Dortmund fan scene. Ironically, Götze would have met his future employer in his last competitive game for Borussia Dortmund. However, he was not called into the squad for the 2013 Champions League final due to a torn hamstring in his right thigh . Götze later said that the new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola was a reason for the change because he really wanted to play under him.

After his rehab because of a ruptured muscle fiber, Götze made his competitive debut for Bayern on August 24, 2013 (3rd matchday) against 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga. When he won the European Supercup six days later against Chelsea , Götze came on for Thomas Müller in the 71st minute and was injured after a foul by Ramires , but played through. He suffered a ruptured capsule and failed again. On October 19, he came on as a substitute against Mainz 05 in the second half, was then involved in three goals and thus helped to turn the 0-1 deficit into a 4-1 win. He also scored his first competitive goal for Bayern Munich in the Champions League after his substitution against Viktoria Pilsen . He scored his first Bundesliga goal for the new club on October 26 in a 3-2 win against Hertha BSC, which made it 3-1. In the top match of the championship on November 23, with which Borussia Dortmund could have caught one point at Bayern, he scored 1-0 against his former club after being substituted for Mario Mandžukić while booing thus a high 3-0 victory in the 66th minute. With that, Bayern set themselves apart from their competitors. On March 25, 2014, Götze secured the championship title with FC Bayern on the 27th match day and thus earlier than ever in the history of the Bundesliga. On May 17, 2014, he prevailed with Bayern in the cup final against Dortmund 2-0 in extra time and won the double of the championship and the cup. In 2015 the championship title was defended.

On August 22, 2015, Mario Götze celebrated his 100th Bundesliga victory with a 2-1 away win against TSG Hoffenheim and at the age of 23 years, 2 months and 19 days is the youngest player to do so. During the international match against Ireland on October 8, 2015 , Götze pulled a muscle tendon and was out for the rest of the year. On February 1, 2016, Götze returned to team training and was back in the squad for the first time on February 20, 2016 against SV Darmstadt 98 . After 160 days, he made his comeback in the Bundesliga on March 12, 2016, when he was in the starting line-up in the 5-0 home win against Werder Bremen , making it his 150th Bundesliga game. On May 7, 2016 (33rd matchday), Götze celebrated his third German championship in a row and his personal fifth championship with FC Bayern . With the cup victory on May 21, 2016 after a 4-3 win on penalties against Borussia Dortmund, he won his third double .

Return to Borussia Dortmund

Götze (left) in a duel with Diadié Samassékou from FC Salzburg (2018)

After Götze was unable to assert himself at FC Bayern and the new coach Carlo Ancelotti had suggested a change, he returned - a year before the end of the contract - to Borussia Dortmund for the 2016/17 season , where he dated one until June 30, 2020 Received four-year contract. He played his first game after his return on September 10, 2016 (2nd matchday) in the 0-1 defeat against RB Leipzig . Four days later, he scored his first goal after the move in a 6-0 UEFA Champions League win over Legia Warsaw . During the first half of the season Götze was used irregularly. The media often associated this with minor injuries that he suffered, the competition in the offensive area of BVB and generally the familiarization phase after his return. At the end of February 2017, it was announced that Götze had a myopathy due to a metabolic disorder, which was the explanation for his frequent muscle injuries and weight problems. After the illness became known, Götze withdrew from the public in order to concentrate fully on his recovery; The way the association dealt with Götze's illness was praised. Until then, he had only made eleven Bundesliga appearances in the 2016/17 season, in which he scored one goal. He also scored one goal in four Champions League games and was also used in the second round of the DFB Cup .

After the illness had cured, it was used again on the first day of the 2017/18 season . Under the new coach Peter Bosz , Götze established himself as a regular player in the ten position. On matchday 13, he suffered an ankle injury against FC Schalke 04. Because of this injury, he dropped out the rest of the first half of the season. Only after the winter break did he play against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 18 and was in the starting line-up. Under the successor to Bosz, Peter Stöger , who was dismissed on matchday 15 , Götze lost his undisputed position in the starting XI: he was often substituted, came on late or did not even appear. In addition, Stöger publicly criticized him for his achievements. At the end of the season he made 23 appearances in the Bundesliga, where he scored two goals, as well as five Champions and four Europa League games without a goal.

After preparing for the 2018/19 season, Götze was initially considered the winner of the coach change to Lucien Favre . After playing in the first round of the DFB Cup against SpVgg Greuther Fürth , however, Favre renounced the services of the midfielder in the Bundesliga: after he was not in the squad at the beginning of the season, Favre did not nominate him for the following games Only in the Champions League game on September 18, 2018 against Club Bruges (1-0) he was used. Dealing with Götze was received and discussed with great public interest. It wasn't until October 6, 2018, the 7th match day, that he made his first Bundesliga appearance of the season when he came on for Julian Weigl in the 77th minute of the 4-3 win against FC Augsburg and seven minutes later in the interim 3-2 lead met. As a result, Götze belonged again to the extended tribe formation. Initially, he was used in the first half of the season as the wrong nine in the striker, often to keep the opposing defenders busy with his pace before he was substituted for the less agile striker Paco Alcácer . In the second half of the season Götze finally established himself as a top performer in Favre's system, where he played more often than ten or eighth and in the meantime even took over the captain's armband from the injured Marco Reus . At the end of the season, which Borussia Dortmund finished as runner-up, he scored seven goals and assists in 26 Bundesliga games.

In August 2019, the offensive player won his fifth title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern, was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . For the 2019/20 season Götze lost the regular place he had earned in the second half of last season. He was used on average only in every second competitive game, mostly as a substitute, since in the first half of the season Paco Alcácer and after his change in the second half of the season, the young Erling Haaland occupied the center of the attack. In both the Champions League and the DFB Cup, he was eliminated with Dortmund in the round of 16. In the run-up to matchday 27, sports director Michael Zorc announced that Götze's expiring contract had not been extended and that the player would therefore be leaving the club for free in summer 2020. He played his last game for BVB on May 26, 2020 (28th matchday) in the 0-1 defeat against FC Bayern Munich. As a result of the birth of his first child in early June 2020, it initially received special leave before due to the DFL - hygiene plan as part of the COVID-19 pandemic could not meet the requirements and no longer was used as for the rest of the season. In the run-up to the last game of the season against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (0: 4), Götze was officially bid farewell by the club's officials in the local Westfalenstadion .

National team career

Junior national teams

Götze before a qualifier against Austria (2011)

Götze made his debut in the national jersey in April 2007 in a friendly match between the German U15 team and Switzerland. He then played for this team one more time before being transferred to the U16s . He scored his first international goal on his debut in this age group. He scored the 3-0 in the 3-1 victory over Denmark. Gotze played a total of eight games for the U16, in which he scored three goals.

He was then regularly appointed to the U17 team. While preparing for the U17 European Championship in his own country in 2009 , he even led the national team as captain at times. Reinhold Yabo filled this position during the tournament, but Götze was appointed to the 18-man squad that competed in the home championships. On the occasion of this nomination, the then U17 national coach Marco Pezzaiuoli presented his players on the DFB website and described Götze as a “real rascal” who had “all technical and tactical skills”, “could play the role of playmaker” and “always did goal dangerous ". During the finals, Götze was a regular player and was only spared in the last preliminary round game, when the semi-finals were already certain after two opening wins. So he made four appearances and was also in the final, in which the German U17s won the title with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands after extra time, over the full distance on the field. His only goal in the tournament was 4-0 in the second preliminary round against England.

By participating in the semi-finals, the U17 selection had already qualified for the U17 World Cup in Nigeria that same year . Götze was also nominated for this tournament, although he had to pause for six weeks right before the World Cup because of a hamstring tear in his thigh . In West Africa he was a regular on his team and played all four games. Personally, he was able to increase his number of hits compared to the European Championship to three, but he was eliminated with the DFB selection in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Switzerland .

After the two tournaments, his time with the U17 ended, for which he appeared 13 times and scored five goals.

On November 10, 2010 he was nominated for the first time for the senior national team of Germany for the friendly match on November 17 in Gothenburg against Sweden . In the game, he came on in the 76th minute, making him the youngest national team debutant since Uwe Seeler , who made his debut in 1954 at the age of 17 years and 167 days. He benefited from the fact that shortly after the 2010 World Cup, mainly new players should be tested. On August 10, 2011, he was in the starting line-up of the national team for the first time in the friendly against Brazil in Stuttgart. In the 3-2 win he scored his first international goal to make it 2-0, making him the fourth youngest scorer in the national team (together with Adolf Jäger and Klaus Stürmer ).

On September 2, 2011 in Gelsenkirchen in the European Championship qualifier against Austria, shortly after being substituted on, a few minutes before the end of the game, he scored the goal to make it 6-2. At the European Championships in 2012 he was part of the German team, but only made a brief appearance when he came on as a substitute in the 80th minute of the quarter-final against Greece .

Götze was appointed to the squad for the 2014 World Cup by national coach Joachim Löw . On June 21, 2014, he scored his first goal at a World Cup in the second group match against Ghana . In the final against Argentina on July 13, 2014, he scored the winning goal for Germany as a substitute with the 1-0 in extra time, which was prepared by André Schürrle with a cross. After the game, Götze was named Man of the Match by FIFA . At the award ceremony, Götze held up the jersey of his playmate Marco Reus with the number 21, who had dropped out due to an injury . At the age of 22, he is the youngest German scorer in a World Cup final and replaced Helmut Rahn , who was 24 years old at the “ Miracle of Bern ”. His goal was later voted goal of the month and goal of the year , as well as goal of the decade in May 2020 . The expression "Götzseidank" came in third place in the German word of the year 2014 vote . On March 29, 2016, Götze played his 50th international match in the Allianz Arena in a 4-1 win against Italy and scored the goal to make it 2-0.

He was in the national team for the 2016 European Championship and was used four times in the tournament. In each of the three preliminary rounds he was in the starting line-up. After that, he was only used again in the semifinals when he was substituted on when he was 0-1 deficit in the last third. Instead of the hoped-for equalization, however, the 2-0 for France fell and the German team was eliminated.

Götze played his last international match against France on November 14, 2017. He was not nominated for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .

Style of play

The then DFB sports director Matthias Sammer said in 2010: “He is an exceptional player, has good speed, is enormously creative and has outstanding technical skills,” and Götze is “one of the greatest talents that the German Football Association has ever been would have". Götze is considered an all-rounder in the offensive area and can be used very variably, because he can play in the left, central and right offensive midfield as well as a false nine .

The trainer Felix Magath described him in 2011 as a "talent of the century".
