Daniel Simmes (born August 12, 1966 in Dortmund ) is a former German soccer player and current coach .
Career
Simmes started playing football at SV Urania Lütgendortmund and soon after switched to DJK Karlsglück Dorstfeld before joining Borussia Dortmund in 1979 . From 1988 he played for the Karlsruher SC in the Bundesliga . Overall, he was active 166 times in the top German league from 1984 to 1991. He also played three games for the German U-21 national football team between 1986 and 1987 .
With a solo run over 70 meters, the striker scored the goal of the year on October 5, 1984 in BVB's game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . At 18 he is the youngest goalscorer of the year to date.
Berti Vogts , then DFB youth coach, promised him at the time that he would make him a national player if he is national coach. It never came to that.
In October 1990, Simmes, as a Karlsruher SC player, made a momentous statement: “The fans tear me down, laugh at me every time I touch the ball. That doesn't make any sense. ”After that, Simmes never played in the Bundesliga again. He played in the mid-1990s for the regional division Alemannia Aachen and Wuppertaler SV . The reason for his decline was a congenital heart defect that caused him to suffer from cardiac arrhythmias that impaired his circulation. However, this cause was only discovered by Belgian doctors after his active career in 2003. He describes his situation with the words: “I was always so sleepy. Before every game, I always felt as if I had been up and running for 90 minutes. "
After the end of his career as an active player in 2003, he initially worked as a coach of the U14 team at RSC Anderlecht . Since 2009 he has coached the U15 youth at Lierse SK . After a stopover as a coach of KV Turnhout in the 2011/2012 season, he then took over the first team of Lierske SK. Between 2013 and 2016, Simmes no longer received a permanent coaching contract, but was responsible for 14 games as assistant coach under Oliver Guillou. He and the team won the national soccer cup in 2015 and 2016 and in 2016 came second in the Super League. Since the 2016 season and after Guillou's death, Simmes has been the full-time coach of the first team.
